
Grizzlies Fall in Series Finale to Miners

SAUGET, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners scored five runs in the fourth inning and held on to beat the Gateway Grizzlies 10-5 Sunday afternoon at GCS Ballpark.
The loss was the Grizzlies third straight and moved them just a half game ahead of River City in the West Division.
After three no-hit innings for Gateway (33-19) and Southern Illinois (29-22), the Miners broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning.
Gateway starting pitcher Tucker Jensen (5-2) allowed four hits, walked two batters and hit a batter in the fourth, leading to five Southern Illinois runs.
Jay Austin and Ryan Cavan picked up RBI singles, Tyler Booth drew an RBI walk and Steve Marino and Phil Butler brought in a sacrifice fly each.
Jensen lasted just four innings, allowing five runs on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts in the loss.
Gateway went hitless until the fifth inning. After walks to Xavier Macklin and Tommy Richards, Madison Beaird brought in two runs on a two-out single to make it 5-2.
Aaron Gates brought in a run on a groundout in the seventh inning and Frank Martinez hit a three-run eighth inning home run to give the Miners a 9-2 lead.
Gateway made things interesting in the eighth inning, scoring three runs on three hits. TJ Bennett drove in two runs on a single and Macklin picked up an RBI single as well.
Southern Illinois added a ninth inning insurance run on a Booth RBI single.
The Grizzlies will be off for the All-Star Break before returning to action Friday night at Traverse City.
The Grizzlies will host the Frontier League All-Star game at GCS Ballpark with festivities beginning Tuesday with the Home Run Derby at 7:05 and the Battle of the Sexes Softball Showcase to follow.
On Wednesday, the Frontier League All-Star game will take place at GCS Ballpark at 7:05 and the largest fireworks display GCS Ballpark has ever seen will cap off the festivities after the game.
