Gateway Grizzlies News Release
SAUGET, Ill. - Steve Marino brought home Luis Parache on a sacrifice fly in the 11th inning to give the Evansville Otters a 2-1 walk-off win against the Gateway Grizzlies Friday night at historic Bosse Field.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Grizzlies and moved them into a tie for first place in the Frontier League West Division with Windy City.
Newcomer Brett Kennedy (0-1) took the loss for the Grizzlies.
Gateway (48-44) starter Alex Kaminsky and Evansville (37-44) starter Adam Champion dueled throughout the majority of the three hour and thirty three minute contest. Despite their great outings, both hurlers received no decisions.
Kaminsky went seven scoreless innings for the second straight start, allowing only four hits while striking out a season-high ten batters.
Champion matched Kaminsky pitch for pitch, tossing seven scoreless innings with only three hits allowed.
The game was scoreless until the eighth inning when Grizzlies catcher Landon Hernandez hit his 13th home run of the season with two outs in the inning to give the Grizzlies the one-run edge.
Evansville mounted a ninth inning rally to push the game into extra innings. Dan Killian picked up a pinch-hit single with one to bring the game tying run on base. After a walk to Parache and a fly out by Marino, Billy Killian picked up an RBI single to extend the game.
The loss moved the Grizzlies to 6-3 in extra-innings this season.
Gateway left 13 runners on base during the game. All four of the Grizzlies hits were extra base hits. John Shelby and Antone DeJesus had triples, Alex Guthrie picked up a double and Hernandez homered.
Gateway and Evansville continue their series on Saturday night. Right-hander Brett Zawacki (1-2) makes the start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 6:35 CT.
