Hawks Lose

NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters broke a one-run game open with a four-run fifth inning and went on to beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 6-1, on Friday at the Corn Crib.

Normal broke a scoreless tie with three straight two-out hit, including a RBI single by Randy Wells, off Rockford starter Drew Rucinski in the fourth inning.

In the fifth, Jason Thompson led off with a single and Jesse Olivar doubled him to third base. Ty Wiesemeyer hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Thompson and move Olivar to third. Rucinski was ejected by infield umpire Dave Logan after the play. Kyle Lindquist came on in relief and gave up a RBI single to Bobby Rinard and a two-run homer to Pat McKenna.

Rucinski (6-3) has lost two straight starts since he won his first decisions as a starter.

Normal starter Drew Provence scattered a run on six hits over six innings for the win. Provence (5-2) struck out six and walked five. He lost the shutout on Trevor Whyte's two-out RBI single in the sixth inning.

The series continues at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

The RiverHawks open their final homestand of the season when they play Washington at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday. Kids eat free with paid admission.
