Washington Wild Things News Release
WASHINGTON, Pa - Jhonny Montoya, in his first start since June 28, allowed one run on three hits in five innings, as the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Wild Things, took game two of their doubleheader with the Windy City ThunderBolts 6-1 Friday night at CONSOL Energy park.
The win was Montoya's first since he was credited for a victory on August ninth in a relief appearance against the Lake Erie Crushers.
Montoya started the season in the Things' rotation, but suffered from soreness in his throwing arm in mid-May, missing nearly a month.
Since returning, Montoya has only appeared as a reliever but has pitched well recently. After initially struggling, he has posted a 2.05 ERA in his last 11 outings.
The Things offense tallied single runs in each of the first four innings in earning the split of the doubleheader.
Andrew Heck led off the bottom of the first with a triple to right field. Heck scored to give the Things an early 1-0 lead on Darian Sandford's sacrifice fly one batter latter.
Windy City struck right back the following inning with a run of their own to even things up at one.
A half inning later, however; Washington again would scratch across a run, this time on a series of errors that allowed Gus Benusa to cross the plate.
In the third, the Wild Things tallied another run when Mark Samuelson drove in Heck with a double to left field. Samuelson took a 0-2 pitch from Paul Montalbano the opposite way, just out of the reach of left fielder Brandon Decker who was shaded towards center field.
In the fourth, it took two pitches for Washington to extend its' lead to 4-1. This time it was Shain Stoner with a solo bomb to left field that cleared everything. The homer was Stoner's fourth of the season and team-leading 41st RBI of the season.
The Wild Things added some insurance runs when Jim Vahalik singled in Gus Benusa and Stoner.
Al Yevoli and Orlanto Santos came in and worked a scoreless sixth and seventh innings.
The Wild Things and ThunderBolts return to action Saturday night at 7:05. Airtime on WJPA will be at 6:55. Justin Hall will take the mound for the Wild Things. Tickets for tomorrow night's contest are still available and can be purchased by visiting the CONSOL Energy Park box office, online at www.washingtonwildthings.com or by calling 1-866-WILD.
