Otters Tie Game in Ninth, Win It in 11 over Gateway

(EVANSVILLE, Indiana) - b0 Third baseman Steve Marino hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning to lead the Evansville Otters to a 2-1 comeback win over the Gateway Grizzlies on Friday at Bosse Field.

Second baseman Luis Parache hit a one-out triple down the left field line off of Gateway right hander Brett Kennedy to set-up Marino's game winning RBI.

Both Gateway and Evansville had multiple opportunities to score early but the game remained tied until the later innings. Otters left-hander Adam Champion left the bases loaded in the third inning and took a two-hitter into the seventh. Gateway righty Adam Kaminsky also left a pair of runners on base in the fourth, while striking out a season-high 10 batters.

The game remained tied until the eighth inning when catcher Landon Hernandez hit a solo home run against reliever David Kubiak.

Down 1-0, Evansville would stage a ninth inning rally against closer Jordan Cudney. Pinch hitter Dan Killian reached on a one-out single and scored the game tying run when his brother, catcher Billy Killian, blooped a single to center field.

In the top of the 11th, relievers Patrick Crider and Eric Massingham combined to walk three batters and strike out Ben Ives looking to end the inning.

The Otters would then win moments later on the sacrifice fly by Marino to win the series opener.

Evansville is now 36-45 after the victory as Gateway drops to 48-34.

Champion threw 7.0 scoreless innings, scattering three hits and five strikeouts. Crider threw 2.1 innings without allowing a hit or run. Massingham records his fourth win of the year.

Game two of the series will be played on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. CDT at Historic Bosse Field.

It is Breast Cancer Awareness Night at the ballpark brought to you by Econo Lodge. The Evansville Otters will be wearing special pink colored jerseys during the game that will be auctioned off at the end of the evening. There will also be a postgame fireworks extravaganza, sponsored by Marathon. It is expected to be the biggest night of the season at Bosse Field.

Right-hander Wynn Pelzer (1-3, 4.15 ERA) will be starting for theOtters against fellow Gateway righty Brett Zawacki (1-2, 5.74).
