
Miners Defeat Freedom

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners defeated the Florence Freedom 3-2 on Friday night. David Harden earned his ninth win of the season by pitching 7.2 innings and allowing two runs (one earned). He gave up eight hits and two walks. He struck out two batters in the win. Harden has now pitched no less than seven innings in his last four starts.
After Jason Ganek hit two out single, Miners catcher Chris Anderson hit a two run home run in the top of the fourth inning off Freedom starter Andy Clark to give the Miners an early 2-0 lead. That would be the the Miners last hit of the ball game. The Freedom would score a run off Harden in the bottom of the fifth inning as left fielder David Harris hit a two out RBI single.
The Miners would extend their lead by two when Anderson scored on an error by Pierre LePage after a ball put in play by short stop Jake Kaase to give the Miners a 3-1 lead. Florence would score a run in the bottom of the eighth inning off Harden as designated hitter Eddie Rodriguez hit a two out double and RBI that would knock Harden out of the game. Nick Cicio came in relief and got pinch hitter Victor Gomez to ground out to third to end the threat in the inning.
Brandon Cunniff pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his fourth save as a Miner. The Miners improve to 49-32 with the win. The Miners will look for the series win as they send LHP Brian Fowler to the mound. The Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame show on US 97.7 and the Miners Radio Network with Mike Ventola will get underway at 4:45 pm. First pitch will be at 5:05 pm.
