August 17, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release

Florence, KY-The Southern Illinois Miners(49-32) led wire to wire and held off the Florence Freedom(44-38) for a 3-2 win Friday night at the Home of the Florence Freedom. The Miners improved to a league best 24-16 away from home and remained in the driver's seat in the wild card race.

The Miners broke up a scoreless game in the 4th against Freedom starter Andy Clark(1-1). After a Jason Ganek infield single, Chris Anderson followed with a two-out two-run homerun. The homerun was Anderson's first of the season as it gave the Miners a 2-0 lead. The Freedom cut the lead in half in the 5th. With two on base, and one out, David Harris lined an RBI single into left field scoring Kyle Bluestein. Clark, left the game after pitching 6 innings allowing 5 hits, while striking out 6. The lone mistake he made was surrendering the two run homer to Anderson. In the 7th inning, Jose Velazquez walked Anderson and Will Block. Brennan Flick then came in and walked Cory Harrilchak. With the bases loaded, Jake Kaase hit a hard grounder to second baseman Pierre LePage. LePage couldn't handle it, as Anderson came in to score on the error.

The Miners took a 3-1 lead going into the 8th. With two runners on base and with one out, Eddie Rodriguez singled into left field scoring Harris to cut it to a 3-2 lead. That would be the closest the Freedom would get as in the 9th they had the tying runner on first base with two outs, but Brandon Cunniff struck out LePage to end the game.

The Miners got a terrific start from Dave Harden(9-5) who went 7.2 innings allowing just one earned run. Harden induced three double plays on the night. Cuniff collected his 8th save of the year. The Freedom outhit the Miners 8-5 in the loss as Rodriguez had two hits.

The Freedom and Miners continue their series Saturday night. Southern Illinois will feature LHP Brian Fowlwer(5-8, 3.65) as the Freedom will give the ball to RHP Alec Lewis(4-7, 5.02) The game can be heard starting at 5:50 with Steve Jarnicki on Real Talk 1160 AM and realtalk1160.com.
