CornBelters Sprint by Rockford in Return Home

NORMAL -The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, won the first game of their home stand 6-1 on Friday against the Rockford RiverHawks at the Corn Crib.

The CornBelters struck first when Ernie Banks reached base with a two out single and was sent to third with a single hit by Steven Felix. Randy Wells hit an RBI single to bring Banks home and give the 'Belters a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.

Normal put up four more runs in the fifth. Jason Thompson started off the inning with a single and advanced to third when Jesse Olivar hit a double. Thompson came home for the first run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Ty Wiesemeyer, while Olivar advanced to third. Bobby Rinard batted in Olivar with an RBI single and then crossed the plate himself when Pat McKenna hit a two-run home run to left field, leaving the 'Belters lead at 5-0.

The RiverHawks put up their own run in the sixth when Trevor Whyte batted in Matt Greener to cut Normal's lead to 5-1.

The 'Belters made up for it, pushing an unearned run across in the bottom of the sixth inning. Wells reached second on a RiverHawks error and came home after Thompson hit an RBI triple, giving the CornBelters a 6-1 advantage.

Normal's Drew Provence (5-2) pitched six innings for the win, while Rockford's Drew Rucinski (6-3) took the loss.

The CornBelters will play game two of the series tomorrow night at the Corn Crib at 6:30pm. Normal will put right-hander Tyler Lavigne (5-7, 4.44 ERA) on the mound to face left-handed pitcher Ziggie VanderWall (6-5, 5.17 ERA) for the RiverHawks. Pregame will begin on WJBC.com at 6:20pm.
