Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - Two early goals against took the wind out of the Manchester Monarchs sails as they fell to the Providence Bruins, 3-1, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday night.
Manchester (7-6-1-1) dropped to third place in the Atlantic Division with 16 points. Providence (6-6-1-1) is in fifth place in the Atlantic Division with 14 points.
"We can't make excuses, we weren't mentally tough tonight," explained Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. "We started turning over the puck at the beginning of the game and gave them the momentum. They gained confidence from there.
Center Levi Nelson's first period goal gave the Bruins a 2-0 advantage and served as the game-winning goal. The Bruins showed no mercy as Nelson tallied his third goal of the season only 50 seconds after defenseman Yury Alexandrov netted the first goal of the game. Nelson stole the puck from Monarchs defenseman David Kolomatis in the neutral zone and continued toward the goal. Manchester defenseman Alec Martinez got in the way and tried to halt his momentum but Nelson managed to get the wrist shot off and the puck slipped through the legs of goaltender Martin Jones. Center Wyatt Smith picked up the lone assist on the goal.
Alexandrov lit the lamp at 3:19 of the first period to give the Bruins the early lead. Center Jamie Arniel fought for the puck with a Monarchs defenseman in the trapezoid. Once he gained control, Arniel dished it off to right wing Kirk MacDonald in the left corner. MacDonald skated away from the boards and directed the puck up to Alexandrov at the right point where the defenseman one-timed it right over the shoulder of Jones.
At 6:58 in the third period defenseman Matt Bartkowski fired a slap shot from the left point that flew right past Jones and put the Bruins up 3-0. Center Zach Hamill fought for the puck behind the net and found Arniel open on the power play. Arniel slid the puck back to Bartkowski at the blueline for a blast that ended in his second goal of the season.
Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov recorded his second goal of the season at the 28-second mark of the third period to put the Monarchs on the scoreboard. Voynov gained control of the puck in the Monarchs' zone and carried it up the ice. After successfully crossing the blueline, the Monarchs defenseman fired an off-balanced wrist shot from the slot that sailed over goaltender Michael Hutchinson's right shoulder.
Jones (2-1-0) took his first loss of the season with 30 saves on 33 shots. Hutchinson (3-2-0) earned his third win of the season, stopping 24-of-25 shots on goal.
Manchester was 0-for-6 on the power play. Providence was 1-for-6 with the man advantage.
