Former Monster Defeats Lake Erie for Second Straight Game
November 13, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
For the second consecutive game, former Monster Chris Mueller scored a shorthanded breakaway goal to lead the Milwaukee Admirals to a victory over Lake Erie. On Saturday, his game-winner came with just 1:07 remaining in regulation and gave Milwaukee a 3-2 win over the Monsters.
With the loss, the Monsters hold a record of 6-7-1-2, while Milwaukee improved to 9-3-1-2.
After notching three points (2G, 1A) in Friday's contest - a 4-0 Admirals win - Mueller continued his surge against his former team by opening Saturday's game with a goal just 5:59 into the contest. His tally came on Milwaukee's first shot of the game, and he was assisted by Gabriele Bourque.
Before the first period expired, the Monsters answered with their third shorthanded goal of the season, tying the game at one goal apiece. Mike Carman scored his second of the season when he took a pass from Justin Mercier and slipped a shot into the right side of the net at 16:17.
In the middle frame, the Admirals regained their one-goal lead by scoring in a four-on-four situation at the 5:49 mark. Roman Josi gathered the puck just inside the blue line, weaved into the high slot and snapped a shot into the right side of the net for his first goal of the season. Former Monster Jamie Lundmark picked up his second assist in as many games, and Matt Halishuk also assisted for his second point (1G, 1A) in his last two games.
Down 2-1 in the third period, the Monsters retied the game, 2-2, when Mercier scored his third goal of the season at 8:26. Carman assisted for his second point of the night and first multi-point game of the season, while Cameron Gaunce recorded his fourth helper of the season. Coupled with an assist on Lake Erie's first goal of the game, Mercier notched his first multi-point outing of the season.
Deadlocked at 2-2 late in the third period, Mueller stripped the Lake Erie defense in the neutral zone and went in to score a shorthanded breakaway goal at 18:53. Mueller finished the two-game set with his former club by collecting five points (4G, 1A).
Trevor Cann posted 17 saves in his second start of the season for Lake Erie. Cann holds an overall record of 0-1-1-0 this season.
Jeremy Smith made his first start of the season for Milwaukee, stopping 25 of 27 shots faced.
The Monsters will continue their eight-game home stand on Wednesday, November 17th, when they host the Grand Rapids Griffins at 7 p.m.
Three Stars: 1. MIL Mueller (2 goals); 2. MIL Josi (1 goal); 3. LE Mercier (1 goal, 1 assist)
