B-Sens Marred By Missed Opportunities, Fall To Marlies 4-3

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators looked to build upon their momentum from last night's emphatic victory over the first place Penguins as they faced-off against the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League's North Division. 4,239 fans were on hand to witness the game, which featured a Marlies roster that included Binghamton native Jerry D'Amigo. D'Amigo made his professional debut in front of his hometown crowd, which was punctuated by the Marlies 4-3 victory over the B-Sens.
A tripping penalty issued to Patrick Wiercioch 1:05 into play gave the Marlies a quick power play that would put the B-Sens behind early. With an extra man, the Marlies went on the offensive as Jeff Finger slipped a pass to Justin Hodgman in the neutral zone, who skated up by himself and deked out two Binghamton defenders before beating Barry Brust glove side to tally the first goal of the contest.
A minute and a half had not yet elapsed before the Marlies struck again. This time it was Joey Crabb who found the back of the net, courtesy of Mike Zigomanis and Matt Lashoff. Crabb received the puck in the slot and snapped a wrist shot through traffic that made its way past Brust to put the Marlies up 2-0.
The B-Sens showed their grit in the second period, however, putting two goals on the board to cut into the Toronto lead. 3:50 into the period, Geoff Kinrade was able to notch his first goal of the season off of Ryan Keller's missed shot. Keller skated in on the right side of Marlies net minder James Reimer and fired a wrister off Reimer's pad, which deflected back to Kinrade who buried the puck into the back of the net.
The Marlies retaliated with a goal of their own, 14:51 into the second. Darryl Boyce skated towards the net from the left wing and launched a backhand shot towards Brust that missed its mark. Yet, Greg Scott was there to tip in the puck and re-establish a two goal lead.
Binghamton would answer back a little over two minutes later. Andre Benoit set up Derek Smith for a slap shot from just inside the blue line, which was deflected in off the stick of Colin Greening to lessen the Toronto lead to 3-2.
The Marlies continued to put pressure on the B-Sens early in the third period, scoring again before the clock read 3:00. Reminiscent of Crabb's goal in the first, Josh Engel was able to control a pass from Hodgman inside the left circle, where he whipped a shot on net and past the glove of Brust to light the lamp for the Marlies for the fourth time of the night.
Binghamton's heart was on full display for the remainder of the third, as they attempted to claw their way back from a two point deficit with inspired hockey. At 16:05 in, the B-Sens' hustle finally translated into a goal as Corey Locke was able to muscle a shot past Reimer after collecting a rebound on Greening's missed attempt. Benoit would also earn his second assist of the night on the play, which cut the Marlies' lead back to one goal.
Finding it difficult to capitalize on their scoring chances, the B-Sens were forced to pull Brust for an extra attacker in the game's final minute in hopes of one last opportunity to tie the game, but Binghamton would come up short, and the Marlies would escape by the score of 4-3.
Up next, the B-Sens hit the road for Hershey tomorrow where they will face the Bears at 5 p.m. Fans can listen live on 680 WINR-AM or 1430 WENE-AM beginning 30 minutes before game time for Countdown to Faceoff with Grady Whittenburg, the voice of the B-Sens.
