Worcester Sharks News Release

WORCESTER, MA - Special teams and goaltending was the difference on Saturday night in Worcester. Brad Thiessen recorded a shutout while Ryan Craig scored on the power play and Tim Wallace scored short-handed for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton as the Penguins defeated Worcester 2-0 in front of 5,007 fans at the DCU Center.

Alex Stalock made 24 saves on his bobblehead night and the Sharks hit the post and the crossbar in front of a filled DCU Center.

The two teams combined for a very hard hitting, but turnover filled, first period of play. The Sharks played the early part of the period in their own end, but began to put some pressure on Penguins goaltender Brad Thiessen mid-way through the period. The game remained scoreless until late in the period, as the Penguins struck first on a power play. Forward Ryan Craig (3rd) converted on a turnover in the slot, with assists by Geoff Walker and Keven Veilleux, to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead after the first 20 minutes of play. Shots in the period were 12-10 in favor of Worcester.

The second period produced the same hard hitting and turnover prone play as the first period. Worcester began the second period on a power play but failed to convert on several scoring chances. Both teams had trouble gaining momentum and creating offense off the rush. The Sharks got another chance on the power play midway through the period but instead gave up a goal as the Penguins netted a shorthanded tally by forward Tim Wallace. The shorthanded goal was his 6th of the season and was assisted by Robert Bortuzzo and Dustin Jeffrey. The rough play between the two teams resulted in a fight late in the period as Sharks defenseman Nick Petrecki squared off with Keven Veilleux on a delayed penalty call. The period ended with the score 2-0 in favor of Scranton and the shots in the period were 11-10 in favor of Worcester.

The Sharks began to awake from their offensive slumber in the third period. While the Penguins defensive game contained the Sharks attack for most of the night, Worcester controlled the third period as they peppered the Scranton net with 15 shots in the period. However, Penguins goalie Brad Thiessen continued his stellar play as he turned away every offensive chance for Worcester. The Sharks attempted rally came up short as the Penguins skated away with the 2-0 victory.

The Sharks overall record falls to 6-4-1-2 (15pts) and to 3-2-1-1 (8pts) on home ice.
