Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

The Albuquerque Isotopes (14-11) allowed seven runs in the last two innings to turn a tight game into a laugher as the Omaha Storm Chasers (16-10) drubbed the ‘Topes 11-4 Wednesday night at Isotopes Park.

Before the offensive onslaught, Omaha was paced by starter Mike Montgomery, who stymied the ‘Topes for six dominant innings, allowing just one run on a mere three hits while walking four and striking out one. Even when Albuquerque was able to muster a baserunner, he was quickly erased as Montgomery (2-1) coaxed four double-plays in six shutout frames.

After scoring a pair of runs in the third on back-to-back RBI singles by Johnny Giavotella and Eric Hosmer to take a 2-0 lead, Omaha doubled the advantage in the fourth when Lucas May roped a two-out, two-run single with the bases loaded to give the visitors a 4-0 edge.

The Isotopes would make things interesting in the seventh. Trent Oeltjen started the rally with a lead-off single, chasing Montgomery from the mound after the starter's 94th pitch. Corey Smith immediately followed with a double, moving the runner to third for Jamie Hoffmann, who drew a walk from reliever Greg Holland to load the bases. With John Lindsey at the plate, Holland uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Oeltjen to sail home easily with Albuquerque's first run while the other two runners advanced 90 feet. Lindsey then knocked home Smith with an RBI groundout before Damaso Espino added a run-scoring groundout of his own to bring Albuquerque back to within 4-3.

Any Isotopes momentum quickly evaporated in the Storm Chasers half of the eighth as the visitors plated five runs to break the game wide open. Omaha sent 11 men to the plate in the frame and scratched out seven hits, the big blow coming from Giavotella in the form of a two-run single that gave the Chasers a 9-3 cushion.

After two more Omaha runs in the top of the ninth made the score 11-3, Albuquerque delivered one last blast thanks to a solo homer by Hoffmann to make the final margin 11-4 Storm Chasers, Albuquerque's most lop-sided defeat of the season.

‘Topes starter Tim Redding (1-3) suffered the loss, although he deserved better. The right-hander yielded four runs, all of them unearned, while scattering eight hits, walking one and striking out three. After Redding departed, Isotopes relievers combined for seven earned runs in three innings to allow the Storm Chasers to run away with the contest.

Albuquerque will attempt to get the series split on Thursday behind lefty Alberto Bastardo (2-0, 3.57), who will face Omaha right-hander Vin Mazzaro (1-0, 4.66 ERA) in a 6:35 PM start from Isotopes Park.

The ‘Topes' continue their massive eight-game homestand that features wall-to-wall promotions, including BBoy McCoy's first appearance at Isotopes Park, post-game fireworks, and a Mother's Day extravaganza that includes a pre-game celebrity softball game, a carnation giveaway to the first 1,000 moms, and the team's first ever Bark In the Park. Tickets for any Isotopes game may be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or on-line at www.albuquerquebaseball.com or www.ticketmaster.com.
