Iowa Cubs News Release

The Round Rock Express (17-10) defeated the Iowa Cubs (13-14) by a 9-2 score on Thursday afternoon at Principal Park. Round Rock took three of four games from Iowa in the series. The loss puts the Cubs back under the .500 mark on the season.

Round Rock starter Neil Ramirez (3-1) walked Cubs' leadoff hitter Tony Campana to start the Iowa half of the first inning. Campana then stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by Express catcher Robinzon Diaz. The next batter, Lou Montanez, knocked in Campana with an RBI fielder's choice. Ramirez settled in nicely afterwards, and gave Round Rock a solid outing. He pitched five and two-thirds, gave up two runs on four hits, struck out five and walked two.

The Express responded to the 1-0 deficit quickly in the second inning. Brad Nelson singled to start the inning and would score on a Luis Cruz double to center field. Diaz added an RBI fielder's choice later in the inning to put Round Rock up 2-1.

In the fourth, the Express caused some two-out damage and eventually knocked Cubs' starter Todd Wellemeyer out of the game, spoiling his Iowa return. Craig Gentry, who had singled with one out, got himself into scoring position by stealing second base. Wellemeyer got Diaz to pop out before Esteban German singled, driving in Gentry. Endy Chavez then walked, and Brian Barden delivered the knockout blow to Wellemeyer with an RBI-single off the base of the right field wall. Jeff Stevens recorded the final out of the inning by inducing a groundout by Nelson. Wellemeyer (0-1) was charged with the loss.

Round Rock blew open the game with a five run sixth inning. They would score a run on an RBI-double by Barden, a bases loaded hit-by-pitch to the head of Cruz and a three-run double to deep center by Gentry.

Every Round Rock starter reached base at least once. Barden finished the game 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Cubs added their second and final run in the bottom half of the sixth inning on a bases loaded walk to Bryan LaHair that scored Campana. Campana went 1-for-3 with both runs scored for Iowa and pushed his hitting streak to eight games.

Wellemeyer pitched three and two-thirds innings, gave up four runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out two in his first start of the season. Thomas Diamond pitched the final five innings of the game. He allowed five runs on six hits, walked three and struck out three.

The Cubs begin a four game set with the New Orleans Zephyrs Friday night at Principal Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 with Jay Jackson (1-0, 3.94) expected to take the mound for Iowa opposite Tom Koehler (2-0, 3.25) for New Orleans.
