Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA -The Tacoma Rainiers turned in a successful ninth-inning come-from-behind effort to top the Tucson Padres 7-6 in front of 3,046 fans at Cheney Stadium on Wednesday night.
Trailing the Padres 6-5 with two outs in the ninth inning, Matt Tuiasosopo tied the game with a single to left field that scored shortstop Alex Liddi from first base. Two batters later, catcher Josh Bard reached base on a fielding error by first baseman Anthony Rizzo, scoring Tuiasosopo from second and putting Tacoma on top for good.
Tucson posted the original ninth-inning rally in the outing after erasing a 5-3 Rainiers lead with four runs in the top of the frame. The first baseman Rizzo went deep with Aaron Cunningham aboard to cut Tacoma's advantage down to just a run. Two batters later, designated hitter Matt Clark hit another two-run homer to give the Padres a one-run edge heading into the bottom of the inning.
Infielder Dustin Ackley was responsible for getting the Rainiers in control of the game after hitting his first career grand slam, putting the Rainiers up 4-2 in the top of the bottom of the fifth inning. The blast was Ackley's third of the season and first since April 16.
The shortstop Liddi led the Rainiers lineup after putting together a 3-for-5 performance, with Tuiasosopo and outfielder Carlos each contributing a pair of hits.
The win went to the reliever Chris Smith (1-1) despite the right-hander surrendering four runs to the Padres on three hits in the ninth inning. Starter Blake Beavan tossed a season-high seven innings on Wednesday night, allowing two runs on four hits with one walk and one strikeout.
The Rainiers (10-17) play the final game of their four-game series with the Tucson Padres at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday. Left-hander Chris Seddon (0-1, 3.77) will get the start for Tacoma against Padres right-hander Simon Castro (2-1, 9.00).
