Redbirds' Error in 11th Gives Z's Walkoff Win

New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Matt Carpenter's fielding error with the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the 11th allowed the winning run to score, giving the New Orleans Zephyrs a 5-4 victory on Thursday night and a series win over the Memphis Redbirds.

The Zephyrs loaded the bases in the 11th, and with two out, Jesus Merchan hit a slow grounder to Carpenter. But the Memphis third baseman mishandled the ball twice, allowing Merchan to beat the throw with a headfirst slide at first.

It was the Zephyrs' first walkoff win since Donnie Murphy's 10th inning homer against Oklahoma City on May 28, 2010. It was also the Zephyrs' first win on Cinco de Mayo since the "Music City Marathon" in 2006, a 24-inning contest in Nashville which was suspended after 18 innings and completed the following day.

Memphis took an early lead in the second when Z's starter Dallas Trahern hit two batters in a row with the bases loaded, including opposing pitcher P.J. Walters, to give the Redbirds a 2-0 lead.

Ryan Klosterman responded in the bottom of the inning with a three-run homer, his third three-run blast of the year, to give the Z's a 3-2 lead.

Andrew Brown got the lead right back for the Redbirds, drilling a two-run shot deep over the wall in left-center field, putting Memphis ahead 4-3.

New Orleans tied the game in the seventh when Klosterman led off with a triple past a diving Freddie Bynum in left. Aaron Mathews picked up his fifth pinch hit of the year, singling through the hole at shortstop to score Klosterman and tie the game at 4-4.

Trahern relinquished the game to the bullpen in the sixth inning, and Zephyrs relievers turned in six scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and striking out six.

Steve Cishek (1-1) picked up the win, fanning four in two hitless innings.

Rich Rundles (1-2) took the loss for the Redbirds, who have dropped seven of eight meetings with New Orleans this season.

The Zephyrs travel to Des Moines on Friday to begin a four-game series with the Iowa Cubs. Tom Koehler (2-0, 3.25) will get the starting nod for New Orleans, opposing Jay Jackson (1-0, 3.94). First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
