Iowa Cubs News Release

The Cubs activated RHP Todd Wellemeyer and have released LHP Polin Trinidad, announced today by Chicago. Wellemeyer, who signed a minor-league deal with Chicago in the offseason, had remained in the Cubs' spring camp in Mesa, Ariz., where he was recovering from a hip injury.

This is Wellemeyer's second stint with the Chicago Cubs organization. He was originally drafted by Chicago in the fourth round of the 2000 draft and has spent parts of three seasons with Iowa from 2003-2005.

He was traded to the Florida Marlins in 2006 and has also pitched for Kansas City, St. Louis and most recently, with San Francisco in 2010.

After spending most of his time as a starter in the minor leauges, Wellemeyer made the transition to the bullpen in the majors before becoming a part of the starting rotation with St. Louis. He won a career-high 13 games with the Cardinals in 2008, while also reaching a best in innings pitched (191.2).

With Iowa, Wellemeyer owns a 10-8 record with a 4.19 ERA in 38 appearances (28 starts). He last pitched for Iowa in August of 2005. He will join Iowa's starting rotation and make his first start today against Round Rock.

Trinidad appeared in eight games for Iowa and was 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA and one save.
