Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (22-22) fell out of first place as they suffered their 11th fall-from-ahead loss of the season, dropping the third game of the series with the Tucson Padres (25-21) by a score of 7-5. The Chasers have now lost seven of their last 11 games, and four of the last six.
Omaha held a 5-4 lead when starter Will Smith exited the game after six innings of work, but the Padres battled back with three runs over the next two innings while the Chasers offense could not register a hit in their final 13 batters. Omaha is winless in all four starts by Will Smith at home this season despite the left-hander only surrendering nine total runs in 24.0 total innings. Smith struck out eight batters on the night for the fourth time this season, after he had totaled only seven games in his career up until this year with that many punch-outs.
The Padres offense recorded 14 hits, tied for the third most allowed by the Omaha pitching staff in a game this year, and every Tucson batter had a hit while five players notched multi-hit games. The Chasers have 73 hits against them in the seven games this homestand, and have had their opponent racked ten or more hits in eight of the last nine games overall. Only leftfielder Xavier Nady had a multi-hit game for the Storm Chasers, which included his seventh homer of the season that gave Omaha a 4-3 edge in the fourth, and the veteran has now recorded a hit in 13 consecutive starts.
In the loss second baseman Johnny Giavotella recorded his team-leading 31st RBI of the season, matching a career high total for the first two months of any professional season that he set in his first year in Omaha in 2011. Utility man Irving Falu extended his hitting streak to ten games with a first inning single, the third player to have a double-digit hit streak for the Chasers this season, and in his last 23 games Falu has recorded at least one hit in 20 of the games.
Omaha will wrap up the eight-game homestand tomorrow as they send out left-hander Chris Dwyer (3-2, 3.10 ERA), who tossed a nine-inning complete game in his first career appearance against Tucson last season. Dwyer will face off with former Omaha Storm Chaser Sean O'Sullivan (3-2, 3.96 ERA), who won 13 games in the last two seasons for Omaha, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. on the second "Thirsty Thursday" of the homestand.
