Memphis Redbirds News Release

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Memphis Redbirds jumped on Salt Lake Bees starter A.J. Schugel for six runs in the first inning and coasted to a 17-6 win on Wednesday night at Spring Mobile Ballpark.

The game began with back-to-back triples by Justin Christian and Kolten Wong. Ryan Jackson followed with an RBI single. Schugel retired the next two men, but struggled in his efforts to get the third out. Chad Huffman and Rob Johnson delivered with consecutive run scoring singles. J.R. Towles wrapped up the first-inning outburst with a two-run home run to left field, his fifth of the season.

Schugel (1-3) would last just two innings in taking the loss after allowing nine runs (six earned) on nine hits.

Brock Peterson led a 19-hit attack with two homers, a single, and six RBIs. Wong contributed four hits. In addition to his first inning triple, the Redbirds' second baseman had a pair of doubles, a single, one walk, and tied a franchise high by scoring four runs. Jackson had two hits and drove in three runs.

The Redbirds had four home runs among their nine extra-base hits. Along with the two Peterson homers, Towles went deep in the first and Jamie Romak went back-to-back with Peterson in the seventh inning.

Scott McGregor (1-0) was strong in his Triple-A debut. The University of Memphis product allowed just two runs on four hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out four. Salt Lake got to the right-hander for two runs in the second, but managed just two hits over the next four innings before McGregor gave way to the bullpen.

The Redbirds need a win on Thursday night to salvage a split of their four-game series and eight-game road trip. Nick Additon (2-1, 4.07) will take the ball for the Redbirds and Matt Shoemaker (3-6, 4.42) will get the start for the Bees.
