Sky Sox Storm Isotopes in Loss
May 23, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Albuquerque (23-23) dropped game three of their four game-series against the Sky Sox (26-18) 9-1 despite a strong bullpen effort allowing one run over 6.2 innings.
The Sky Sox tagged Albuquerque starter Aaron Laffey for three runs and two homers in the first inning. Centerfielder Tyler Colvin took the second pitch he saw over the center-field wall for his fifth home run of the season and right-fielder Matt McBride added a two-run shot.
Isotopes shortstop Justin Sellers (1-for-4) drove in the lone Albuquerque run in the second inning. He doubled to right, extending his hitting streak to seven games and scoring Moore on the play to cut the deficit to 3-1. His seven-game hitting streak matches a team high on the season held by five Isotopes.
McBride went deep on Laffey for the second time in three innings in the third. The homer plated three runs and catcher Lars Davis added an RBI double to the frame's scoring line improving Colorado Springs lead to 8-1. The Sky Sox right-fielder, McBride, drove in six of the eight runs through four innings and went 5-for-5 with three runs scored on the night. The Sky Sox tacked one more on in the seventh.
Laffey (1-2, 7.78) suffered his second consecutive loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits. The southpaw surrendered three long balls and tallied a walk and a strikeout.
Right-handed Red Patterson stepped in for Laffey in the third inning and tossed 4.1 innings of one-run baseball. He walked two and struck out seven hitters, the most strikeouts in a game for an Isotopes reliever in 2013.
Righties Josh Wall and Chris Withrow combined for two scoreless innings of relief and Withrow fanned three. Lefty Kelvin De La Cruz finished the game for the Albuquerque staff recording a strikeout against the only batter he faced.
Jeff Manship (3-1, 6.00) earned the win for Colorado Springs. The righty went 5.2 innings surrendering one run on five hits. He also walked one and struck out six.
The Isotopes complete their eight-game homestand tomorrow, May 23 with game four against the Sky Sox at 11:05 AM MDT. RHP Matt Palmer (1-2, 6.17) will take the ball with Albuquerque looking for the series' win against Colorado Springs righty Drew Carpenter (1-4, 6.45). Catch all of the game action on 610 AM "The Sports Animal" with Josh Suchon on the call.
