Today's Game: The RedHawks will look to win the series as they finish up on the west coast and meet the Fresno Grizzlies for the final time during the 2013 regular season at 9:05 p.m. central time.
Last Game: Once again, the RedHawks used two key innings to claim victory over Fresno, winning 7-3. Trailing 2-0 in the third inning, the RedHawks scored three times, including RBI singles by Jake Elmore and Brett Wallace. The Grizzlies tied the game in the fourth, but the RedHawks scored four times in the fifth after the bases were empty with two outs. Elmore hit a solo homer to break the tie, and three batters later, Fernando Martinez went yard with a three-run shot. RedHawks pitcher Ross Seaton turned in his first quality start of the season (6 IP, 2 ER) and earned his first Triple-A win. Seaton, Jason Stoffel, and Eric Berger held the Grizzlies to one hit after the fourth inning and allowed just one runner to get into scoring position.
Today's Probable Pitcher: Jarred Cosart looks to bounce back after his first loss of the season...On Saturday in Sacramento, Cosart labored through 4.1 innings and allowed three runs. He left the game in a scoreless tie in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and one out. All three base runners scored as part of a six-run rally for the River Cats...The loss has not dampened his terrific season. Cosart enters tonight fifth in the league in ERA (2.49), third in opponent batting average (.197), and fifth in strikeouts per nine innings (9.98). He is the team leader in wins, innings (43.1), strikeouts (47), and walks (20)...Saturday marked just the second time in nine outings he allowed more than one run...He has fared just fine away from Oklahoma City, going 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA over four road starts, and opponents are hitting just .172.
Against the Grizzlies: 2013: 2-1 2012: 3-1 All-time: 51-29 In Fresno: 23-16
The RedHawks took three of four from the Grizzlies in their lone series in 2012. The final game had a memorable ending, with RedHawks pitcher Brian Bass providing a game-winning single in the bottom of the 12 inning to lead to a 3-2 win. The RedHawks pitching staff was great, posting a 2.31 ERA and allowing one home run...During their last trip to Fresno in 2011, the RedHawks split the four-game set. They scored exactly five runs in each game...Excluding Tucson, which has only been in the league since 2011, Fresno is one of three teams the RedHawks have a winning record against at both home and on the road (Omaha, Round Rock)...The RedHawks have guaranteed a split at worst, meaning they will not lose the season series for the 15th time in 16 years.
Party Like it's 1999: At 27-18, the Redhawks are off to their best start through 45 games since 1999 (29-16).
Big 12 Big Trip: The RedHawks are in the middle of their annual 12-day road trip while the Big 12 Baseball Championship takes place at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Tomorrow morning the RedHawks will travel to Des Moines, where they will play five games in four days to make up for an earlier postponement against the Iowa Cubs. Through the first seven games they are 4-3.
Running With the Pac: The RedHawks will finish a stretch of 16-straight games against Pacific Conference foes tonight, going 9-6 so far. Last season the RedHawks went 14-17 against the other side of the league, including a 6-10 mark on the road.
Fernando En Fuego: Fernando Martinez has hit safely in five-straight games, going 9-for-21 (.429) with two home runs and eight RBI. Before this recent roll, Martinez had gone just 3-for-26 through his first seven games with OKC this season.
Wally World: Brett Wallace is riding a five-game hit streak, during which he has gone 8-for-22 (.364) with four extra-base hits. Over the first seven games of the current road trip, Wallace has hit two home runs and collected 11 RBI. Since joining the RedHawks on April 21, he has hit the third-most home runs (7) and has the fifth-most RBI (24) in the PCL.
Dinger Details: The RedHawks have hit a home run in three-straight games for the third time this season. However, it's the first time they have hit multiple home runs in a game on back-to-back days. They have gone deep five times over the first three games in Fresno, already tying their highest total for a single series this season (@ Albuquerque, April 20-23). Perhaps most impressively, seven of their last nine homers have come with at least one runner on base. Only nine of their first 24 dingers came with runners on base. The pitching staff has kept the Grizzlies in the park over the last two games, after allowing four homers in the series opener on Monday. They have surrendered just 32 home runs this season, tied for second-least in the league.
Bases Loaded Bashers: The RedHawks have caught fire with the bases loaded. They are seven for their last nine with 16 RBI with the bases full going back to Austin Wates' game-winning single May 14 against Salt Lake.
At Your Own RISP: The RedHawks have held their opponents to a .185 average (22-for-119) with runners in scoring position over the last 13 games as well as a .187 mark (26-for-139) during the previous 16 contests.
In the Zone: The RedHawks have issued just six walks over the first three games of this series. They had walked 35 batters over the five games prior to Monday.
Starting Line: RedHawks starting pitchers have pitched at least six innings in back-to-back games for just the second time this season (Peacock & Wojciechowski, May 8-9) since the team moved to a traditional five-man rotation on April 25. Before Tuesday, none of the five previous starts on the road trip lasted longer than five innings, with three starts failing to complete five innings.
