Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Fresno, Calif. - Jake Elmore and Fernando Martinez each homered to break a tie in the fifth inning as the Oklahoma City RedHawks went on to beat the Fresno Grizzlies 7-3 before 6,065 at Chukchansi Park Wednesday night.
The Grizzlies started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Kensuke Tanaka led off with a single. With Tanaka at first base, RedHawks first baseman Brandon Laird committed a two-base missed catch error on a pickoff attempt, putting Tanaka at third base with none out. Tanaka eventually scored on an RBI groundout by Roger Kieschnick to give Fresno the early 1-0 lead.
Fresno scored again in the second inning. With none on and two outs, Chris Dominguez drew a walk and stole second base. Carter Jurica followed with an RBI double to push the lead to 2-0.
The RedHawks jumped in front with three runs in the third inning. Jonathan Villar brought home a run on a fielder's choice, and Elmore followed with an RBI single to tie the game.
Brett Wallace stepped up next and gave the RedHawks a 3-2 lead with an RBI single. Through the first the six games of the current road trip, Wallace has collected 11 RBI.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Grizzlies put runners at the corners with none out, but after a strikeout and a caught stealing, a runner remained at third with two down. Jurica then delivered his second RBI of the night with a single and tied the game, 3-3. The shortstop finished 3-for-4.
The RedHawks had none on and two outs in the fifth when Elmore jumped on a breaking ball from Shane Loux for a solo home run out to left field to put the RedHawks back in front. After a walk and a hit batter, Martinez cranked a three-run homer to give the RedHawks a 7-3 lead.
Although the RedHawks did not score the rest of the way, Fresno only had one hit after the fourth inning and put just one runner in scoring position.
Ross Seaton turned in his first quality start of the season and earned his first Triple-A win. Seaton (1-4) allowed three runs (two earned) and six hits over six innings. He struck out and walked three each.
Jason Stoffel and Eric Berger pitched the final three innings and allowed just one hit with five strikeouts.
Loux (4-2) picked up the loss for the Grizzlies. The Fresno starter allowed a season-high seven runs on seven hits with two walks and no strikeouts.
