May 23, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Albuquerque (23-24) dropped the series finale 4-3 as the Sky Sox (27-18) did all their scoring in the middle innings. Centerfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. went 3-for-4 (BB, 2B) and made two sparkling plays in centerfield robbing at least two more Colorado Springs runs.
Alex Castellanos (2-for-3, 3 RBI, R) went deep off of starter Drew Carpenter in the first inning staking Albuquerque to an early 2-0 lead. The right fielder has five home runs on the season and three of them have come off Carpenter. Third-baseman Elian Herrera (2-for-4, 2 R) collected a single in the frame extending his hitting streak to six games.
Playing a role in all three runs scored, Herrera singled with two outs in the third and Castellanos drove him in on his third double of the season improving the Albuquerque advantage to 3-0. He had a season-high three RBI on the day and Herrera leads the Isotopes with 16 multi-hit games.
Colorado Springs pulled within one of the Isotopes in the fourth inning. Shortstop Charlie Culberson belted a homer to center field scoring Tyler Colvin on the play.
After plating the tying run in the fifth, Colorado Springs took a 4-3 lead on Culberson's second home run of the day. He has six long balls on the season.
Shortstop Justin Sellers extended his hitting streak to his season-hit eight games with a double in the eighth. Isotopes starter Matt Palmer (1-3, 5.97) suffered the loss pitching 5.1 innings allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits. The righty walked three, struck out five and surrendered two homers.
Southpaw Geison Aguasviva and righty Anthony Ortega combined for 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Aguasviva allowed three hits and fanned a batter. Righty Steve struck out two batters in his scoreless ninth.
Right-handed pitcher Rob Scahill (3-0, 4.80) earned the win for Colorado Springs tossing 2.2 innings. He did not allow a run. Righty Logan Kensing earned his fourth save of the season after loading the bases on three walks in the ninth before recording the final out.
The Isotopes hit the road for an eight-game stretch against the Nashville Sounds and Memphis Redbirds. Right-handed Angel Castro (3-2, 3.64) opens the trip against Nashville's righty Frankie De La Cruz (1-5, 7.15) tomorrow, May 24 at 6:05 PM MDT. Albuquerque returns to Isotopes Park for a four-game series against the Oklahoma City RedHawks beginning June 1.
