Offense struggles as 'Wolves get routed by Mets

The SeaWolves were shutout through eight innings and fell by a score of 10-1 to the Binghamton Mets at NYSEG Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Mets struck in the bottom of the third inning against Erie starter Luke French. Emmanuel Garcia singled with one out and was doubled over to third by Jonathon Malo. Nick Evans followed with a ground ball off of French that went into right field, bringing home a pair, giving Binghamton a 2-0 lead.

Binghamton added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Ambiorix Concepcion led off with a double and Salomon Manriquez singled to put runners on the corners. French then retired Josh Peterson for the first out. An intentional walk to Jose Coronado loaded the bases for Emmanuel Garcia. Garcia singled to right, scoring Concepcion to make it 3-0. On the play, Casper wells nailed Manriquez on a force out at thirdf for the second out. Malo then doubled home Coronado and Garcia for a 5-0 B-Mets lead. Evens followed with an RBI single, scoring Malo, putting Binghamton ahead 6-0.

The score would remain the same until the bottom of the seventh when the B-Mets put the game away against reliever Anthony Tomey. Peterson led off with a single but on a fielder's choice off the bat of Coronado was out at second. With one down, Garcia connected on his third hit of the game, a double to put a pair in scoring position. Malo then singled home Coronado and Garcia for an 8-0 B-Mets lead. Malo finished the game with four RBI. After a wild pitch put Malo into scoring position, with two outs, Mike Carp singled him home to make it 9-0. Later in the inning, Concepcion singled home Carp to giving Binghamton a commanding 10-0 lead.

The ‘Wolves finally broke the shutout bid by Binghamton in the top of the ninth. Ryan Roberson led off with a single and got to second on passed ball. Angel Flores flied to right, moving Roberson to third and with two outs, Deik Scram singled him home to make it 10-1. The hit for Roberson in the ninth extended his season-best hitting streak to eight straight games.

B-Mets starter Jonathan Niese (5-4) worked six shutout innings, allowing three hits. He struck out a season-high nine.

French (4-7) took the loss for the ‘Wolves going four innings, allowing six runs on seven hits with five walks and three strikeouts. It was the shortest outing for French since taking a no-decision against Akron on April 29, also going four innings in that game.

Erie pitchers combined to walk 10 batters in the game and the loss drops the ‘Wolves to 2-5 against Binghamton this season.
