Connecticut Defenders News Release

MANCHESTER, NH- The Defenders lost a close game in New Hampshire to start off a short three-game stint, 6-5 to the Fisher Cats.

The Cats scored in the second inning on an RBI double off the bat of J.P. Arencibia to bring Jacob Butler to plate as New Hampshire claimed a 1-0 advantage.

The Defenders struggled at the plate as southpaw starter Ricky Romero tossed six innings of scoreless baseball. The Defs managed just one hit in six frames (a single by Ben Copeland) as Romero appeared to be untouchable.

Meanwhile, in the fifth, the Fisher Cats sent eight men to the plate, scored four runs on three hits and two walks. The four runs crossed the plate on a pair of two run doubles by Ryan Patterson and Arencibia, respectively.

A scoreless sixth led to an eventful top of the seventh as the Defenders finally figured out Romero. Travis Ishikawa started off with a single, Eliezer Alfonzo followed suit with a base knock of his own, and Eddy Martinez-Esteve reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners with one out. Olmo Rosario popped a single to score Ishikawa, Dave Maroul singled to re-load the bags and Martinez-Esteve came home on an error by the third baseman. Jake Wald fisted a single into center to plate Rosario and Ben Copeland sent Maroul home on a sacrifice fly to make it a 5-4 game in favor of New Hampshire.

The Fisher Cats answered in the home half of the seventh on a solo homer by Travis Snider to extend the lead to 6-4.

Martinez-Esteve slapped his third long ball of the season over the left field fence to slim the advantage to 6-5.

Connecticut will play two more in New Hampshire before coming home for a week. Listen to all the action on the road on the Defender's Radio Network or worldwide at ctdefenders.com.
