Streak Snapped...The Aeros had their 10-game winning streak snapped Sunday in an 11-2 loss to Portland at Canal Park. It was Akron's first loss since June 3rd, when they lost the opener of their six-game road trip in New Hampshire. While the Aeros lit up the scoreboard during the streak (8.4 runs per game), they could not get anything going after the first inning Sunday. In the first, CF Trevor Crowe and SS Josh Rodriguez led off with walks, and C Chris Gimenez singled to load the bases. 3B Wes Hodges - the Eastern League RBI leader - followed with a two-run single to left, giving Akron an early 2-0 lead. The Aeros mustered just three singles in the last eight innings though, and Portland scored the last 11 runs in the game.

Dropping the Ball...The Aeros lost the 2-0 lead quickly, as the Sea Dogs struck for six runs (three earned) in the second inning while bringing a dozen men to the plate. Portland's Mark Wagner and John Otness led off with a double and a hit-by-pitch off Aeros starter LHP Ryan Edell. After Mickey Hall struck out, Ryan Khoury singled to load the bases and Iggy Suarez and Bubba Bell followed with base hits to tie the game and keep the bases loaded. Tony Granadillo then hit a tapper to Edell's left that he couldn't gather to throw home, which allowed everyone to reach safely on the fielding error. Jeff Corsaletti followed with an RBI single to make it 4-2, with the bases still loaded. Sandy Madera then hit a grounder to third that Wes Hodges fielded cleanly, although he opted to throw home rather than try to start a 5-4-3 double play and the idea backfired when Gimenez dropped the throw for the second error of the inning. Edell got Wagner to pop up for the second out but walked Otness to score the sixth run, and that was all for the Boston native. LHP Shawn Nottingham finally ended the frame, but Portland would add five more runs, including two home runs, to put the game out of reach.

Cashing In...Akron 3B Wes Hodges was named Bank of America Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending June 15th. He hit .522 (12-23) during Akron's six-game homestand, while collecting eight RBI and a home run. On the year, Hodges is hitting .322 with eight homers and 53 RBI. He is on pace for 114 RBI, which would shatter the franchise record of 96 set by Chan Perry in 1997.

It's Only June...But that doesn't mean this isn't an important series between the top two teams in the Eastern League's Southern Division. The Aeros sit just one game behind Bowie, and the two teams are tied in the loss column. Before Sunday's games, the teams were briefly tied until Bowie's win over Harrisburg and Akron's loss to the Sea Dogs. The Aeros are 6-7 vs. Bowie this season, and they hit just .237 against the league's third-best pitching staff.
