Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
Kalamazoo, MI - The Cincinnati Cyclones (4-1-2-0) earned a 7-1 win over the Kalamazoo Wings on Friday night. Forward Judd Peterson led the way with a pair of goals, while forwards Justin Vaive, Jesse Schultz , and Mike Marnell, along with defensemen Tobie Bisson and Eric Knodel netted lone tallies for the Cyclones, who record their highest goal output of the season.
The Cyclones came out firing early and often in this one, as just 1:04 into the opening period when forward Brady Vail sent a shot on goal that was slammed in by Vaive on the back door to put Cincinnati ahead, 1-0. That lead became 2-0 at the 14:13 mark of the frame, when Bisson took a feed from Marnell and launched a blast from the point and in to give the Cyclones a two-goal cushion.
A couple of minutes later while on a 5-on-3 power play, Knodel took a pass and fired a slapshot from the blueline in past Wings goaltender Jake Hildebrand to give Cincinnati a 3-0 advantage.
Kalamazoo managed to cut in to the Cyclones lead with less than two minutes to play when forward Justin Taylor lit the lamp shorthanded to trim the Wings deficit to 3-1, after 20 minutes.
Cincinnati resumed their forward motion in the second, as 6:25 into the frame, Schultz defected a shot from Knodel to put the Cyclones back up by three, 4-1. Roughly six minutes later, Cincinnati lit the lamp again when Peterson took a feed from forward Myles Powell on a 2-on-1, and buried a shot to propel the 'Clones to a 5-1 advantage.
The wheels kept turning, and the Cyclones struck again 1:25 later, when forward Spencer Dorowicz sent a pass from the left circle to Marnell on the backdoor, and he slapped the puck in past new Wings goaltender Keegan Asmundson to give Cincinnati a 6-1 edge.
The Cyclones capped off the period with 1:22 to play when Peterson broke up a play in the neutral zone, skated in on a breakaway and scored his second of the period to give Cincinnati a 7-1 lead after the second.
That was all the scoring the Cyclones needed, as goaltender Michael Houser steered aside all nine shots he faced in the period to preserve Cincinnati's 7-1 win. The Cyclones outshot the wings, 38-28 on the evening, with Houser making 27 saves in the win. The Cyclones head to Brampton to take on the Beast on Saturday night, in the second of a 3-in-3 weekend. Face-off is scheduled for 7:15pm ET.
