Monarchs Fall Short in Overtime, 4-3

MANCHESTER, NH - The Manchester Monarchs fell to the Newfoundland Growlers, Friday night by a score of 4-3, at SNHU arena.

The Monarchs (4-3-2-1), despite tying the game late, could not overcome the Growlers (6-5-0-0) in overtime.

The Growlers opened the scoring at 2:06 of the first period when Josh Kestner scored his third goal of the season. Kestner, tipped a shot from the point in the high-slot, past Monarchs goaltender, Brandon Wildung, making the score, 1-0.

Newfoundland doubled their lead at 4:19 of the first period, when Evan Nuegold scored his first goal of the season. Nuegold received the puck off the faceoff and flicked a wrist shot past the blocker of Wildung, bringing the score to 2-0.

The Monarchs cut the lead in half at 7:11 of the second period on the fifth goal of the season by Nic Pierog. After a scramble in front of the Growlers net, Pierog found the puck at the right post and pushed it past the glove of the Growlers goaltender, Michael Garteig, making the score, 2-1.

The Growlers answered on the power play, at 13:46 of the second period on Brady Ferguson's fifth goal of the season, Ferguson ripped a one-timer from the top-left circle, over the blocker of Wildung, to give the Growlers a 3-1 lead.

Manchester pulled to within one goal at 7:03 of the third period, when Matt Marcinew scored his first goal of the season. Marcinew found the puck off a rebound in the left circle, and chipped a shot over the pad of Garteig, bringing the score to 3-2.

The Monarchs tied the game at 13:15 of the third period, when Spencer Watson scored his fourth goal of the season. Marcinew made a cross-ice pass to Watson and was fired a shot past the glove of Garteig, making the score 3-3.

Newfoundland emerged victorious when Kestner scored his fourth goal of the season and second of the game, finding the puck in the slot and sniping a wrist shot, through the pads of Wildung, ending the game, 4-2.
