Reading Royals News Release

Portland, ME - Reading Royals forward Adam Schmidt scored a top-shelf goal in the third round of the shootout and Branden Komm punched Hayden Verbeek's attempt away in the bottom of the third to give the Reading Royals a 4-3 win over the Maine Mariners Friday at Cross Insurance Arena.

The teams traded goals in the final two minutes of the game. Michael Huntebrinker (1g, 1a) provided Reading the edge with 1:41 left, sniping a short-side shot from the right circle past Brandon Halverson (SOL, 30 saves). Brayden Low nicked it to Huntebrinker after freeing the puck with a body check. Komm (28 saves, 3 GA) surrendered the tying goal at the right post with 48 seconds left to Terrance Wallin from the right doorstep.

Reading also allowed the first goal and earned the Royals their fourth come-from-behind victory of the season. All of Reading's victories have come after allowing the first goal.

Frank DiChiara (1g, 1a) and Steve Johnson scored in the first period to place the Royals ahead, 2-1, after 20 minutes. Maine evened the score at two in the second.

Each team scored on the man up in the opening frame. Maine's John Furgele cannoned a right-point slap shot over Komm's blocker to give Maine a 1-0 edge at 5:24 of the first.

The Royals tied the game at one with 4:43 left in the first. Huntebrinker broke the Maine line, swooped behind cage and passed it back door to the left post for DiChiara. The second-year forward quickly tossed it top shelf and by a sprawled-out Halverson.

With 53 seconds to go in the first and while on the power play, Steve Johnson fired a deep-slot wrist shot by Halverson to give Reading its first lead. Johnson has two goals this campaign. DiChiara passed it to Johnson and received his second point.

Zach Tolkinen lofted a puck through center ice and triggered a breakaway for Dawson Leedahl at 1:19 of the second. Leedahl scored on a wrist shot at the left slot to even the game at two. The teams entered the third tied.
