Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves exploded to score double-digit runs for the third time in the past five games as they took down the Trenton Thunder 10-2 at ARM & HAMMER Park. Erie has now gone 12-3 since May 31 and the win gives the SeaWolves their first series victory in Trenton since 2014.
Erie got on the board in the top of the second against Trenton starter Luis Cessa, who was down on rehab from the New York Yankees. Kody Eaves doubled with one out to give the 'Wolves their first runner in scoring position. Chad Sedio followed and grounded a ball off to Cessa and an errant throw by the pitcher allowed Eaves to score from third for a 1-0 lead.
Trenton would briefly take the lead in the last of the fifth against Erie starter Spencer Turnbull. Turnbull came into the inning hurling 13 straight scoreless frames but gave up a leadoff double to Devyn Bolasky and a triple to Mandy Alvarez as the Thunder tied the game 1-1. Alvarez scored on a Rey Navarro sacrifice fly, giving Trenton a 2-1 lead.
The SeaWolves quickly regained the lead in the top of the sixth against Thunder reliever David Sosebee. Thunder pitchers combined to retire 11 straight before Sergio Alcantara led off with a base hit. Jacob Robson followed with an RBI double to the gap in left-center, tying the game. Robson stole third but was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a Dominic Ficociello fielder's choice. Ficociello stole second and scored on a Josh Lester double for a 3-2 lead. Eaves then shot a ball off of Sosebee's shoe, the pitcher errantly threw to first after collecting the ball, allowing Lester to score for a 4-2 advantage.
Erie extended the lead in the seventh against reliever Paul Young. Jake Rogers led off with a walk and Kenny Wilson singled. The runners advanced on a passed ball and with one out, Robson tripled to left, plating both for a 6-2 lead. Will Maddox lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Robson from third for a 7-2 lead.
The 'Wolves continued to add to the lead in the eighth. Eaves and Sedio each singled with one out. And were doubled home by Rogers making it 9-2. Erie loaded the bases on back-to-back walks from Wilson and Alcantara and Robson picked up his fourth RBI of the night, sending a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Rogers for 10-2 lead.
Two Erie relievers, Trent Szkutnik and Adam Ravenelle each tossed two scoreless frames in relief of Turnbull, preserving the Erie win. The three Erie pitchers combined to strike out 11 without allowing a walk.
The SeaWolves go for the series sweep over the Thunder on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Righty Kyle Funkhouser (2-3, 3.88 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Michael King (1-0, 2.63 ERA).
