A close game in the early innings spiraled out of control in the latter innings, as the Thunder fell to the Erie SeaWolves, 10-2 on Saturday night in front of a crowd of 7,083 at ARM & HAMMER Park.
Rehabbing Yankees right-hander Luis Cessa starter for the Thunder (39-28) and pitched four innings. After a one-out double by Kody Eaves, Chad Sedio reached first base on a comebacker to the mound. Cessa made a late and errant throw to first, allowing Eaves to score.
The Thunder took the lead against Erie (30-36) starter Spencer Turnbull in the bottom of the fifth. Devyn Bolasky led off with a double down the left field line and scored the tying run on a triple to the center field wall by Mandy Alvarez, who then scored on a Rey Navarro sacrifice fly to right field for a 2-1 Trenton lead.
But in the sixth, the SeaWolves rallied for three runs to retake the lead. Jacob Robson followed a Sergio Alcantara single with a RBI-double to tie the game and then stole third base. Robson was thrown out at the plate on an attempt to score on a grounder to first baseman Chris Gittens, but a double by Josh Lester and a throwing error by Thunder reliever David Sosebee handed Erie a 4-2 advantage.
Robson added a two-run triple in a three-run seventh for the SeaWolves, and also delivered a sacrifice fly in a three-run eighth inning rally. Robsons four RBI led the way for Erie in the lopsided game.
Sosebee and Paul Young allowed a combined nine runs (eight earned) across three and one-third innings of relief for the Thunder, who were unable to score a run off Erie relievers Trent Szkutnik and Adam Ravenelle.
The loss dealt the Thunder a series defeat, and gave the team its third loss in its last four games.
Your Thunder continue their homestand on Sunday at 1pm against the SeaWolves. RHP Michael King (1-0, 2.63) will start for the Thunder, and RHP Kyle Funkhouser (2-3, 3.88) will go for Erie. The first 1,025 fans ages 18 and older. Tickets are available by phone at 609-394-3300 or online at TrentonThunder.com.
