Reading Fightin Phils News Release

(Reading, PA) - The Fightin Phils headed into a perfect weekend of weather in Reading needing to win the last two games of their series with the RubberDucks before a long trip to Portland and New Hampshire. In the ninth inning, they showed the kind of fight that manager Greg Legg loves to see, but ultimately came up short in their comeback. The RubberDucks got four home runs and left with an 8-5 win before a crowd of 7,386 at FirstEnergy Stadium, setting up a possible sweep on Father's Day.

Pitching at home for the first time in over a month, Phillies 40-man member Franklyn Kilome let up a first inning run when he walked leadoff man Andrew Calica, who hustled around on a two-out RBI single from Bobby Bradley. In the second, shortstop Sam Haggerty and designated hitter Tyler Krieger each hit their third home runs of the season to tack on two runs and give the 'Ducks a 3-0 lead.

Kilome allowed one more run in the third, which started with another walk of Ka'ai Tom. After stealing second, third baseman Joe Sever brought him home with a single for his second run batted in of the series and a 4-1 lead. The Fightins got on the board when Darick Hall jumped on an 0-1 offering from lefthander Sean Brady, punishing his third home run to deep center.

In the fourth, Jan Hernandez got things started with a single. Zach Green then drove a deep shot to center field, but had extra bases taken away when Calica made a leaping grab onto the warning track for the first out of the inning. Hernandez later scored on the second wild pitch of the inning from Brady, who got the last out after Deivi Grullon smoked a double over Calica's head on the second go.

With Kilome (1-4) out after five, Akron's Daniel Salters hit a two-run home run off Alexis Rivero, who handed the keys off to Tyler Gilbert for two scoreless innings of relief in the seventh and eight. Calica jumped in on the fun with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth, pushing the lead to 8-3 after Heiker Meneses brought in the Fightins third run with a groundout in the eighth.

Down to their last three outs in the bottom of the ninth, the Fightins loaded the bases with three walks from Argenis Angulo. A Brandon Bednar single made it 8-4, and pinch-hitter Kyle Martin reached via catcher's interference for an RBI and an 8-5 ballgame. With the bases still juiced, Malquin Canelo made the final out, sending the Fightin Phils (26-40) to their sixth straight loss.
