Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

The New York-Penn League has announced that the Aberdeen IronBirds and Lowell Spinners coaching staffs will manage the two All-Star teams on August 18 at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium. Luis Pujols and the IronBirds staff will be at the helm of the South and Joe Oliver and the Spinners staff will lead the North.

Luis Pujols took over as the manager of the IronBirds for the 2015 season. He enters his third season with the Orioles Organization, spending 2014 with the Frederick Keys after he was out of baseball from 2009-2013. Pujols managed Corpus Christi from 2008-09 and Erie in 2001 before his stint with Detroit in 2002... Pujols was the bench coach for the Tigers for 2002, but was named interim manager when Phil Garner was fired after six game. On June 25, 2002, Pujols' Tigers faced Tony Pena's Royals in the first major league game to feature two Dominican-born managers. He served as the Giants' first base coach from 2003-06 and served as bench coach for the 2009 Dominican Republic team in the World Baseball Classic.

Pujols is joined by pitching coach Justin Lord, hitting coach Calvin Pickering, and assistant coach Sammie Starr. Lord is in his second season with the IronBirds, working with the Aberdeen staff in 2014, while Pickering and Starr both enter their first season with the 'Birds.

Joe Oliver is in his second season at the helm for Lowell after making his managerial debut with the Spinners in 2014 as the club's 11th manager in franchise history. A 12-year major league veteran, he was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 1983 June Draft. Oliver made his major league debut in 1989, was a member of the 1990 World Series Champion Reds, and was named the Reds MVP in 1993. He also played with the Milwaukee Brewers (1995), Detroit Tigers (1998), Seattle Mariners (1998, 2000), Pittsburgh Pirates (1999), New York Yankees (2001), and the Boston Red Sox (2001). After his retirement, Joe coached at the youth and high school level, most recently coaching varsity baseball at Boone High School in Orlando, FL after also spending time at Bishop Moore Catholic High School (2012) and Pine Castle Christian Academy (2002-11).

Oliver will have pitching coach Lance Carter, hitting coach Iggy Suarez, and assistant coach Luke Murton with him in the visitor's dugout. All three are in their first seasons with the Spinners.

Aberdeen's Marty Brinker and Lowell's Nick Faciana will also represent their clubs as the athletic trainers.

The New York-Penn League All-Star Game will be held on August 18 at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium at 7:35 p.m. The North Team will be comprised of players from Auburn, Batavia, Connecticut, Hudson Valley, Lowell, Tri-City, and Vermont; and the South Team will be represented by players from Aberdeen, Brooklyn, Mahoning Valley, State College, Staten Island, West Virginia and Williamsport.

The Game will be limited to 9 innings (or less). Two players per position, two DH/Utility players, and ten pitchers have been selected to field two teams (North vs. South). Pitchers will pitch one inning or less and are subject to pitch count.
