Odd Day Ends With Familiar Result, Bklyn Falls 7-2

BURLINGTON, VT - A game that started in a very odd way, ended with an all-too-familiar outcome as Brooklyn lost to the Vermont Lake Monsters by the score of 7-2 on Friday evening. Craig Missigman (1-1) was the hard luck loser as he allowed three unearned runs.

The oddities started about two hours before first pitch when RHP Dawrin Frias, who was scheduled to make the start for the Cyclones, was traded to the Oakland Athletics as the player-to-be-named later in the trade that landed the Mets LHP Eric O'Flaherty. Frias, now a member of the A's organization, was assigned to Vermont - the very team he was scheduled to face. So the righthander just made the march across the field to the home clubhouse.

With Frias on the opposite side of the field, RHP Nicco Blank was the emergency starter for the Cyclones. The righthander was solid through his 4.0 innings of work, scattering four hits and two walks while striking out three and not allowing a run. Even better, Blank got some run support early on, as Brooklyn jumped out to a 2-0 advantage.

David Thompson got things started in the top of the second with a solo blast to left field that gave the Cyclones a 1-0 advantage, their first lead in more than four games. Brooklyn increased their lead in the top of the fourth thanks to a two-out RBI from Brandon Brosher that chased home Zach Mathieu and made it 2-0.

But in the bottom of the sixth, the game took a turn for the worse. Missigman sandwiched a pair of outs around a one-out walk and seemed like he would be heading to the seventh with the lead when Steve Pallares hit a routine ground ball to third base but David Thompsons booted the ball and the inning continued. Skye Bolt took advantage of the extended frame with a booming double to right field that scored a pair and knotted the game a 2-2. Jesus Lopez followed with an RBI single of his own and the Cyclones quickly and unexpectedly found themselves in a 3-2 hole.

An inning later, the Monsters took complete control of the game, taking advantage of control issues from reliever Ruben Reyes. The southpaw failed to retire a batter and allowed a walk, a hit batter, a wild pitch and a single that would eventually lead to three more runs as Vermont blew the game open with a 6-2 advantage after seven. Vermont tacked on an insurance run in the eighth, again with two outs, courtesy of a Seth Brown RBI single to make the final score 8-2.

While Vermont's offense flourished, Brooklyn's bats continued to sputter as they were held to five hits or less for the third straight game. The loss, Brooklyn's fourth straight, drops the Cyclones to 23-23 and 1.5 games behind the Staten Island Yankees who rallied for a 6-4 win this evening.

The Cyclones will look to salvage the series finale on Saturday evening at 6:05 PM when LHP Kevin Canelon takes the mound. Brooklyn will then head to Staten Island to open a critical three-game series against the cross-bridge rival Staten Island Yankees.
