Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - On Princess Night at LeLacheur Park it was the Connecticut Tigers who played the role of "prince," jumping out to a 5-0 lead that they would turn into a 7-1 win over the Spinners Friday night.

Connecticut (23-22) got the scoring started in the second inning on a two-out home run by Shane Zeile to put the Tigers ahead, 2-0. They would extend the lead with a run in the third, taking advantage of a one-out walk by Will Allen and a pair of wild pitches by Javier Rodriguez to push ahead, 3-0.

The Tigers would add a pair of runs in the fourth after back-to-back walks from Rodriguez, a wild pitch moved both men into scoring position. A fielder's choice would plate a run and after Daniel Gonzalez came in from the bullpen a sacrifice fly put the Tigers up, 5-0.

Lowell (24-23) threatened in the bottom of the fourth after Chase Edwards came in for the Tigers in relief. The Spinners loaded the bases with two outs on singles by Luis Alexander Basabe and Chad De La Guerra, plus a walk from Tate Matheny, but Kyri Washington lined out to end the threat.

The Spinners did break through for a run in the fifth inning after Jhon Nunez tripled with one out and Jeremy Rivera followed with an RBI single to make the score 5-1.

The score remained there into the seventh when the Spinners again threatened but came up empty. Tucker Tubbs led off the inning with a double and after a Nunez walk the Tigers went to the bullpen for Nate Fury. Rivera would sacrifice both into scoring position and Basabe walked to load the bases, but Benintendi popped out to shallow right and Acosta grounded into a force out as the Spinners were held off the board.

The Tigers would pad their lead in the ninth, getting a pair of runs after two quick outs for what would be a 7-1 final.

The Spinners left nine on base, going 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position despite a nine hit game. Basabe, Benintendi and Rivera all had two hit games, with Rivera driving in the lone run.

Rodriguez (0-4, 8.27) allowed five runs on three hits and six walks, throwing four wild pitches over 3.1 innings. Gonzalez was effective in long-relief, allowing just the two ninth inning runs on four hits. He struck out six.

The Spinners look to end the homestand on a strong note and avoid a sweep when Kevin Steen (0-0, 3.60) gets the ball for a 5:05 first pitch on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Day at LeLacheur Park.
