Auburn Doubledays Game Notes

August 7, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Auburn Doubledays News Release

Tonight's Game: It's the second game of the series between the Auburn Doubledays and Williamsport Crosscutters. The Doubledays have dropped four straight to the Crosscutters this year and send Jefry Rodriguez to the mound to face Tyler Gilbert.

Last Night's Game: Auburn mounted a small comeback that fell short as it fell to Williamsport 5-3. Down 5-0 in the seventh, the Doubledays scored two in the seventh and one in the eighth, but couldn't push the game to extras in the ninth.

Five in a Row: The Doubledays have won five series in a row. Auburn has taken two of three from Vermont, Lowell, Aberdeen, Hudson Valley, and West Virginia in that order. Since 2010, the Doubledays had never won more than three series in a row until this current stretch.

Bullpen Domination: Auburn's 'pen has been dominant over the course of the season recording a 2.62 ERA (65 ER in 223.2 IP). The starting pitchers haven't been as fortunate recording a 5.30 ERA (105 ER in 178.2 IP). Also of note, the Doubledays have surrendered 106 runs in the first three innings combined (36, 33, and 37 in the first through third respectively). Those 106 runs account for exactly 50% of the runs Auburn's pitching staff has given up this year (212 total).

Regressing to the Mean: When the Doubledays visited the Crosscutters on July 1st, Williamsport sat at 10-1 on the season. After the series sweep, the Crosscutters were 13-1 in 2015. But since that hot start, Williamsport hasn't been the same. Since the sweep, the Crosscutters are 16-16 overall while the Doubledays are 16-15.

Facing All the Righties: When Tyler Gilbert starts for Williamsport tonight, the LHP will end a streak of 19 straight opposing RHP starters the Doubledays will have faced. Over that span the Doubledays went 10-9 (they are 17-19 against RHP starters overall). The last lefty Auburn faced as a starting pitcher was back on July 18th against West Virginia at home. The Doubledays are 5-4 against LHP starters this season.

The Wild Card Chase: With 31 games left in the season, the Doubledays sit 1.5 games back in the wild card race. Lowell currently is in first with Brooklyn 0.5 back, and West Virginia and Connecticut 1.0 game back. Auburn will play West Virginia and Connecticut a combined 5 times (2 and 3 respectively) later this season.

Scouting Williamsport: Austin Bossart extended his hit streak to 14 games and on- base streak to 18 last night with a single in the second. Bossart's hit streak is the longest active streak in the New York-Penn League and dates back to July 6th. His on- base streak is tied with Mark Mathias of Mahoning Valley for the second longest active on-base streak behind Victor Padron's 31 with Connecticut. The Doubledays' longest hit and on-base streaks this season both belong to Andrew Stevenson who is now with Hagerstown. The outfielder hit in 13 straight while reaching base in 15 in a row.
