Nuts' Winkler, Jensen Named Cal League All-Stars
June 7, 2013 - California League (CalL1)
Modesto Nuts News Release
MODESTO, CA - The California League and Carolina League announced their All-Star rosters today in anticipation of the 2013 California-Carolina League All-Star Game to be held at Municipal Stadium in San Jose on June 18th. Voting for each league was completed by the two leagues' managers, general managers and select media members.
The Nuts will be represented by their two aces - right-handed pitchers Dan Winkler and Chris Jensen. Both have put themselves on the map this season within the Rockies organization after stellar first halves. The two hurlers rank in the top three in nearly every pitching category in the California League.
Winkler, a 23-year-old from Effingham, Illinois, has emerged as arguably the best pitcher in the league this season. After his first 12 starts, Winkler ranks first in wins (8), ERA (2.45), opponent's average (.175), and WHIP (0.89), while sitting in second in strikeouts (82). The former 20th round pick by Colorado from the 2011 draft out the University of Central Florida has limited Cal League opponent's to only 43 hits in 62 2/3 innings pitched this season, allowing just 19 earned runs.
Following a month of May where he posted a 1.67 ERA in five starts, Jensen has also proven to be one of the top arms in the circuit. The 22-year-old from Gilbert, Arizona, has allowed only 57 hits in 71 1/3 innings for the 3rd best ERA in the league at 2.90. Jensen is second only to Winkler in WHIP (0.98), walking the second fewest batters with only 13 in his first 12 starts. He is third in opponent's average (.211), innings (71 1/3), and strikeouts (69). The Rockies drafted him in the 6th round in 2011 from the University of San Diego.
The 2013 California-Carolina League All-Star Game will be played in San Jose, CA at Municipal Stadium, the home of the San Jose Giants. Baseball's top prospects, representing 18 Major League teams and 18 Minor League affiliates, will descend upon Municipal Stadium on June 18 as two of the nation's elite Class-A Advanced leagues matchup in the 17th California-Carolina League All-Star Game. After last year's 9-1 victory by the Carolina League in Winston-Salem, N.C., the two Class-A Advanced circuits are deadlocked in the game's history with identical 7-7-2 records.
