Modesto Nuts News Release

STOCKTON, CA - The Nuts erased deficits of 6-0, 8-3, and eventually 8-6 to defeat the Ports 11-8 on Thursday night at Banner Island Ballpark.

With the win the Nuts (29-31) moved within two games of .500 for the first time since April 24th when the club had a record of just 9-11.

Entering the game, Modesto was hitting just .199 as a club with runners in scoring position and two out, but managed to rally for 10 of their 11 runs in the game with two outs in innings. Coming into the game, Modesto's largest comeback this season was only three runs which happened twice this season, the last time coming on April 18th against the Ports.

Trailing 8-6 with two outs in the eighth inning, Tyler Massey launched an opposite field 3-run homer against reliever Pedro Vidal to put Modesto in the lead for the first time all night. Will Swanner then gave the Nuts some insurance in the ninth with a 2-run double that also came with two down. Vidal (0-1), who had given up just four earned runs all season, was tagged for five runs over the final two innings in his first loss of the season.

Stockton raced out to a quick 6-0 lead after the first two innings against Nuts starter Tyler Gagnon, who would exit with one out in the fourth after giving up eight runs on a season-high 11 hits.

Modesto's bullpen was able to stop the bleeding though, and held the Ports to no runs and three scattered hits the rest of the way. Geoff Parker (3-3) worked 3 2/3 scoreless to keep the Nuts in the game, taking over in the fourth for Gagnon and put zeroes on the board until the end of the seventh.

The Nuts got their first runs in the top of the third, as Massey tripled home Swanner with two away in the inning, and Brian Humphries followed with an RBI single. Jared Simon hit a solo home run to right field in the fourth to make it a 6-3 game. After the Ports added their final two runs against Gagnon in the fourth, Modesto rallied for three runs in the fifth to get back in the game. After a pair of singles kept the inning alive, Ryan Casteel smoked one down the third-base line, caroming off the glove of B.A. Vollmuth to score the first run. Simon then followed with a clutch 2-run single to make it 8-6.

Reliever Seth Frankoff slowed down Modesto with two scoreless innings, until the Nuts battered Vidal late the game.

After taking the lead in the top of the eighth, Nelson Gonzalez worked a scoreless inning, and Scott Oberg shut the door in the ninth for his 14th save of the season. He has now racked up five saves in his last 11 games.

There were a combined 28 hits in the contest, with 14 per club. Humphries, Simon, and Taylor Featherston led the Nuts attack with three hits apiece, while Massey paced the club with four RBI's. Ports shortstop Addison Russell went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored, and Tony Thompson went 2-for-5 with three RBI's.

Modesto will go for four wins in a row as they return to Stockton for game two of a four game series at Banner Island Ballpark on Friday night. RHP Chris Jensen (2-4, 2.90) will take the mound for the Nuts, opposite RHP Drew Granier (6-3, 2.50) for the Ports. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
