Lancaster JetHawks News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Chris Epps hit a late two-run home run but the JetHawks needed much more in an 8-3 loss to the San Jose Giants in the series opener at Municipal Stadium on Thursday night.
Clayton Blackburn (3-3), the no. 6 ranked prospect in the San Francisco Giants system according to Baseball America, shut down the JetHawks to the tune of one run on three hits over six innings. The 20-year-old right-hander struck out seven and walked one batter. Lancaster hitters went down looking in five of his seven strikeouts.
San Jose gave Blackburn plenty of runs to work with in the first inning against starter Tyson Perez (2-4). The first four batters reached base and scored against Perez with Angel Villalona driving in the first run of the game with a double to left. Mac Williamson singled in a run, Jeff Arnold hit a sac-fly and the final run of the first scored on Skyler Stromsoe grounder.
Perez tossed scoreless innings in the second, third and fourth but was unable to get an out in the fifth. Villalona led off with his second double of the game, Devin Harris walked and Williamson drove them both home with a double. After a walk to Jeff Arnold, Rodney Linares came out to make the call to the bullpen and bring in Jonas Dufek.
The Giants would add another run on a sac-fly but Dufek did not allow another hit in the fifth. He ended up tossing two scoreless innings of relief.
Perez finished the game allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits. He walked five and did not strike out a batter.
Lancaster got on the board in the sixth inning. Nolan Fontana tripled off Blackburn and scored on an Andrew Aplin ground ball. Blackburn struck out Matt Duffy to end the inning and his night.
Danny Sandbrink tossed the final three innings to pick up the save. He gave up a two-run homer to Epps with two outs in the ninth inning.
San Jose's final run came in the seventh inning against Michael Dimock. The right-hander walked Myles Schroder who then scored on a John Polonius double.
Travis Ballew struck out two in a perfect eighth inning.
The JetHawks (35-25) saw their magic number shrink to six with Inland Empire's loss on Thursday. They take on the Giants (36-24) on Friday night at 7:00 pm. Kyle Hallock (3-0, 4.32) will start against Jose Casilla (1-1, 4.02).
