Inland Empire 66ers News Release
San Bernardino, CA - The Inland Empire 66ers will have three players working over the All Star break with Zach Borenstein, Mark Sappington and Alex Yarbrough having been selected to represent their team and the California League in the annual California-Carolina League All Star Game. This is the highest number of 66ers selected to play in the game since Inland Empire became an Angels affiliate.
"I actually think there are some more guys that deserve it, but these three are great teammates and representatives," said Inland Empire 66ers Manager Bill Haselman. "They are extremely hard workers and they take the game seriously."
Zach Borenstein is leading the league in home runs with 14 and will not only start the All Star game in the outfield, but is scheduled to participate in the home run derby. "I'm excited," said Borenstein of the game and his selection to participate in the derby. "I'm sure I'll be working extra hard in batting practice the days leading up to the break on my derby swing."
Alex Yarbrough will join Borenstein in the starting lineup for the California League. Yarbrough is second in the league in hits with 75 and is top five in batting average as well, hitting.318. "It's a great honor for sure," said Yarbrough of his selection. "I'm really proud of the way the first half came together and I'm looking forward to the All Star game."
Mark Sappington will represent the 66ers pitching staff in the mid-summer classic. He leads the team with seven quality starts this year, and at one point led the league in wins during the first half. "This definitely speaks to the hard work that our staff and coaches put in every day," said Sappington who said he feels he will represent several other deserving 66ers pitchers. "I'm not alone, there are a lot of guys like Kramer Sneed, Mike Morin and R.J. Alvarez who deserve as well."
The 2013 California-Carolina League All-Star Game will be played in San Jose, CA at Municipal Stadium, the home of the San Jose Giants. It will mark the first time that the team has hosted this event. Baseball's top prospects, representing 18 Major League teams and 18 Minor League affiliates, will descend upon Municipal Stadium on June 18 as two of the nation's elite Class-A Advanced leagues matchup in the 17th California- Carolina League All-Star Game. After last year's 9-1 victory by the Carolina League in Winston-Salem, N.C., the two Class-A Advanced circuits are deadlocked in the game's history with identical 7-7-2 records. Inland Empire 66ers
