San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE - The San Jose Giants scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back in an 8-3 victory over the Lancaster JetHawks on Thursday evening at Municipal Stadium. Clayton Blackburn allowed just one run over six innings to pick-up the win as San Jose claimed the opener of the four-game series. The Giants improved their season record to 36-24 and maintained their two-game lead over the Visalia Rawhide (34-26) in the first half North Division race with 10 to play.

Mac Williamson (3-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI) had three hits and drove home three runs to lead San Jose offensively. Angel Villalona (2-for-5, 2 2B, RBI) added a pair of doubles.

Blackburn (3-3) limited the California League's top hitting team to just three hits during a dominant stint on the mound. The right-hander struck out seven and walked one.

The first five Giants hitters of the game reached base against Lancaster starter Tyson Perez with four scoring runs. Brock Bond started the bottom of the first with a single before a bunt single from Chris Lofton put runners on first and second. Villalona then doubled into the left field corner to plate Bond with the first run of the night. After a walk to Devin Harris loaded the bases, Williamson singled to deep right center to score Lofton. Jeff Arnold followed with a sacrifice fly before Skyler Stromsmoe's RBI fielder's choice groundout made it 4-0.

Meanwhile, Blackburn began his night with five scoreless innings. Blackburn retired eight out of the first nine batters that he faced before working around a two-out single and a walk in the top of the third. He then tossed a 1-2-3 top of the fourth and pitched through a one-out hit batsman in the fifth.

San Jose extended their lead to 7-0 with a three-run bottom of the fifth inning. Villalona started the frame with another double into the left field corner before Harris drew a walk. Williamson then doubled home both runners with a line drive to the fence in center field. Williamson eventually scored on Myles Schroder's sacrifice fly.

Lancaster's only run against Blackburn came in the top of the sixth as Nolan Fontana tripled with one out and scored a batter later when Andrew Aplin grounded out to shortstop.

The Giants' final tally of the contest was in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Schroder drew a walk before John Polonius ripped an RBI double into the left center field gap for an 8-1 advantage.

Danny Sandbrink pitched the last three innings for the Giants to earn his first save of the season. Sandbrink worked out of a bases loaded, two out jam in the top of the seventh before a scoreless eighth inning. Chris Epps hit a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the ninth to make the score 8-3, but Sandbrink quickly set down the next batter, Delino DeShields, to end the game. Sandbrink was charged with two runs (both earned) on two hits over his three innings. He walked two and struck out two.

Perez (2-4) suffered the loss for the JetHawks after he was tagged for seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in four-plus innings. Perez walked five and struck out none.
