Rawhide Not Shaken in Pitchers' Duel
June 7, 2013 - California League (CalL1)
Visalia Rawhide News Release
VISALIA - The Rawhide picked up their second win in a row, besting the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 2-1 in a pitchers' duel on Thursday night at Rawhide Ballpark, keeping pace in the division standings with the San Jose Giants and Stockton Ports.
Rawhide starting pitcher Rob Coe turned in the performance the Rawhide needed, pitching 6.0 innings, giving up one earned run on one hit, while walking five and fanning seven Quakes batters.
The lone run for the Quakes came on a solo homer in the top of the 2nd inning from Jon Garcia, an impressive blast to left center field to put Rancho up 1-0.
Rawhide newcomer Yosbel Gutierrez responded later in the game with a solo shot of his own to put the Rawhide on the board, homering off Quakes starter Gustavo Gomez to tie the game. It was his first hit for the Rawhide this season. Gomez was impressive in his own right, lasting 7.0 innings, giving up just the solo homer while striking out eight and walking just one Rawhide batter.
Evan Marzilli did a great job defensively in the top of the 8th inning with the Quakes threatening to take the lead. After a two-out walk and base hit to put runners at the corners, Marzilli robbed O'Koyea Dickson of an RBI hit with a diving catch to end the inning.
The Rawhide would surge in the bottom of the 8th to take the lead. David Nick was thrown out at home after tripling to right for the second out, but Ryan Court would not go quietly into the 9th. With a runner on first, Court tripled off Pedro Baez (L, 2-2) to plate Montilla and provide the final score of 2-1.
Seth Simmons (W, 4-1) would end up being the winning pitcher, as he tossed a scoreless 8th inning. Kaleb Fleck recorded his 6th save in as many opportunities, retiring the side in order in the 9th to secure the victory.
The Rawhide look to keep their First Half Division Title aspirations alive on Friday night at 7 pm against the Quakes for Game 2 of this series. Stick around after the game for a fireworks show! HEART after school program will also be raffling off great prizes all game long, including a $1,000 cash prize, so don't miss out!
