Soo Greyhounds News Release
With their 1st Round pick (3rd overall) in today's OHL Priority Selection presented by StateFarm, the Soo Greyhounds selected defenseman DARNELL NURSE from the Don Mills Flyers.
"Darnell is a young man of tremendous character, and has elite leadership abilities. He is a very raw prospect who I am certain will embrace adversity and give himself every chance to overcome the many obstacles he will face throughout his career in Sault Ste.Marie. We are thrilled that Darnell has decided to report to Sault Ste. Marie instead of electing one of the many NCAA options he was offered" began Hounds General Manager Kyle Dubas.
Nurse, a native of Hamilton ONTARIO, stands 6'3" while weighing 175 lbs.In 38 regular season games played in 2010-11 he had 11 goals and 18 assists, good for 29 points to go along with 72 penalty minutes. At the OHL Cup, the left-shooting rearguard tallied 1 goal and 2 assists good for 3 points in 4 games played.
"To have a player of Darnell's character as our first selection in my tenure as the General Manager of this hockey club makes me feel extremely confident and comfortable in the direction that our club is heading. At the end of the day, Darnell's character separated him from all other prospects and we look forward to providing Darnell with the resources and guidance which will enable him to maximize his potential in the classroom, in the community, and on the ice" concluded Dubas.
The Soo Greyhounds will introduce Darnell to the local media later today while he will also take part in an interview with Gerry Liscumb Jr. on Rock 101 later this morning.Fans will have their first chance to meet the newest Hound during an autograph session later this afternoon from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on the Essar Centre concourse (fans are asked to enter the building using Gate D - Player Entrance at the southwest corner of the facility)
The Greyhounds do not hold a pick in the 2nd round, and will now wait until Round 3 where they make the 2nd (44th overall) and 3rd (45th overall) selections.
