Not Intimidated

Greensboro Grasshoppers News Release

Kannapolis, N.C. - A return to the open road may have been just want Greensboro needed as the Hoppers returned to the win column Monday with a 7-1 victory over the Kannapolis Intimidators.

The Hoppers (29-28) got a much-needed outing from their starting pitcher Brett Durand. Durand shut out Kannapolis (25-32) through seven innings of work and allowed only four hits as he improved to 6-2 on the season. His outing matched the longest by a Hoppers starter this season; Colby Miller went the same distance on April 23 against the same Intimidators squad.

Greensboro got started offensively in the third innings when Ryan Curry drove in Jameson Smith and Ozzie Martinez with a one-out double to left field. Curry's two-run double was all the offense the Hoppers would end up needing, but they decided to play it safe by building a 7-0 lead before the Intimidators broke up a shut out bid with a ninth-inning run off of reliever Matt Mallory.

Curry ended the night with three RBI in a 2-for-5 performance; both of his hits were doubles.

Mike Stanton returned to the outfield for manager Edwin Rodriguez for the first time since May 13 after serving as the Hoppers designated hitter in his last 16 games. He scored two runs in he contest, one of which came on his 11th home run of the season.

Stanton went 3-for-4 for the Hoppers and extended Greensboro's home run streak to eight games with his fifth homer in his last eight games. He also doubled and stole a base to aide the Hoppers.

Following Stanton's leadoff blast in the eighth innings, Hunter Mense completed the team cycle with a two-out triple to left-center field. It was his first triple of the season and the first since his rookie campaign in 2006.

Martinez also had a multiple-hit performance for Greensboro, going 2-for-3 from the plate and leading the team with three runs scored.

Greensboro returns to Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Tuesday to wrap up the quick two-game series with a 10:05 a.m. start time. The two-game series will finish in less than 24 hours combined before Greensboro heads to Lexington for three games.

The Hoppers are scheduled to send the staff's lone southpaw, Jay Voss (0-3, 3.86) to the mound; Kannapolis is expected to counter with RHP Juan Moreno (1-2, 5.74).

Postgame Quick Stats Win - Brett Durand (6-2); Loss - Kevin Skogley (0-1); Save - None Time - 2:42; Attendance - 729
