'Birds Slip Past Captains, 5-4
June 2, 2008 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, Md.- Wally Crancer's clutch single with two outs in the seventh plated Joe Nowicki to give the Shorebirds a 5-4 lead. Six straight outs later, the Delmarva bullpen ensured the Shorebirds fifth consecutive victory, a one-run triumph over the first-place Lake County Captains. With the win, the Birds move within a game and half of first place.
Delmarva jumped out to an early lead, scoring two in the first and two more in the fourth. Joe Nowicki's first-inning double to deep center field extended his hitting streak to 14 games and gave the Shorebirds a 1-0 edge. Four batter's later, Kieron Pope's bases loaded walk forced in another run to give Delmarva a 2-0 lead.
After the Captains churned an unearned run around the bases in the top of the third, Crancer jacked a two-run double to right-field to provide a three-run cushion. Crancer, DHing for the second straight game, registered two hits for the fourth consecutive game.
The Shorebirds three-run advantage shrunk in the fifth when Roman Pena's single brought two Captains across the plate, cutting the Lake County deficit to 4-3. An inning later with one out and runners on the corners, the Captains' Ron Rivas ground out was enough to tie the score at four.
Nowicki's second base hit of the game to lead off the seventh put the go-ahead run aboard, setting the stage for Crancer's second hit, second RBI, and another Delmarva victory.
Delmarva starter Sean Gleason tossed five innings, allowing three runs, two of them earned, on seven hits, but he did not factor in the decision. The victory belonged to Cliff Flagello, who, four days after shutting down Hagerstown over three and a third hitless innings, delivered three more strong frames tonight. Flagello allowed one run on three hits, paving the way for Mick Mattaliano's perfect ninth. Mattaliano picked up his eleventh save of the season.
