RiverDogs Win Sixth Straight, Burn Rome 5-2

June 2, 2008 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release

The Charleston RiverDogs scored two runs in each the seventh and eighth innings to come from behind and defeat the Rome Braves, 5-2, in South Atlantic League action Monday evening in front of 2,219 fans at Joseph P. Riley Jr., Park.

The RiverDogs have now won six straight, including the first five games of their eight-game homestand and improve to 38-19 on the season. Coupled with Asheville's ninth win in a row, a 5-2 victory at Hickory, Charleston remains 2.5 games behind the first-place Tourists with 13 games still remaining in the half.

Last-place Rome drops its fifth straight and falls to 18-38. Charleston is now 8-1 against Rome this season, and the victory marks the fifth straight come-from-behind win against the Braves.

With Charleston trailing 2-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, Dave Williams and Abraham Almonte collected singles against Rome reliever Casey Beck (0-2) to put two on base with only one out. Then after the Braves brought in lefty Tommy Palica to pitch, Justin Snyder worked a walk to load the bases and Bradley Suttle was hit by a pitch to tie the score.

Jesus Montero then hit a dribbler to shortstop Michael Fisher, on which Fisher could only retire Montero at first base and thus plating the go-ahead run leaving Charleston ahead 3-2.

In the eighth, Palica walked Williams with one out, then two batters later nearly ended the inning by getting Almonte to swing and miss on a pitch in the dirt for strike three. However, the Rome catcher Javier Dominguez couldn't get the ball out of the dirt in time to retire Almonte at first base, giving Charleston an extra out in the inning with two runners on base.

Newly-named SAL All-Star Justin Snyder then took advantage of that extra out, lining a two-run double to right field to plate Williams and Almonte and give the RiverDogs a 5-2 lead.

Reliever Jesse Hoover (3-2) picked up the victory in relief in his longest outing of the season. In his four innings of work, the Wakarusa, Ind. native surrendered two unearned runs on three hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Chace Vacek worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to record his fourth save.

Charleston starter Jairo Heredia tossed four shutout innings in his third start since coming off the DL, allowing just two hits with three walks and one punchout in the no-decision.

Hoover gave up Rome's two runs with two out in the fifth on Jason Heyward's two-RBI triple. That inning would have ended one batter earlier had Carmen Angelini not committed a fielding error on a grounder hit by Carlos Lee.

Suttle's sacrifice fly in the first inning plated Almonte, who had doubled to lead off the frame, to give the R-Dogs a 1-0 lead. Rome starter Jose Ortegano pitched scoreless ball for his remaining five innings of work, in total logging six complete frames and striking out eight batters.

Almonte picked up two of Charleston's seven hits, while Cole Miles had a pair to lead Rome's five-hit attack.

Tuesday's game two will feature a special 11:05 A.M. start time for the second of two Education Days at The Joe this season. Charleston will send right-hander Noel Castillo (5-2, 3.39) to the hill, while Rome will counter with southpaw Jeff Locke (1-6, 4.76).
