Drive Comeback Falls Short in Series Opener Versus GreenJackets
June 2, 2008 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Augusta, GA - Felix Doubront (6-3) wasn't himself Monday night. The lefty had only allowed two homers all season, but the Augusta GreenJackets (34-23) belted two in a four-run first inning that catapulted them to a 5-4 victory over the Drive (31-27).
Jered Stanley singled home a run in the top of the first for Greenville, only to see the lead evaporate in the GreenJackets' first at bat. Nick Noonan and Angel Villalona each smacked a two-run homer for Augusta.
In the bottom of the third, Augusta would add a huge insurance run on a Thomas Neal double, as it would prove to be the eventual game-winner.
The Drive began their comeback in the top of the fourth as they scored a run on just one hit. After back-to-back walks to David Mailman and Kristopher Negron, David Marks delivered a two-out, RBI-single.
With single runs in the eighth and ninth innings, the Drive would see their rally come up just short. Yamaico Navarro began the eighth inning with a double and scored as Stanley followed with a single.
An inning later, Navarro collected his third hit of the game with an RBI-single with two outs. The Drive would leave the tying run in scoring position as Daniel Otero struckout Mike Jones to end the game.
Although Doubront was roughed up for four innings to start the game, Jordan Craft and Bryce Cox pitched effectively out of the bullpen as the duo combined to hold the GreenJackets scoreless over the final four innings.
Craft scattered four hits and a walk in 2.2 scoreless innings while Cox was perfect in his 1.1 innings of action.
The Drive will look to split the short two-game stint with the GreenJackets tomorrow evening with first pitch set for 7:00 PM. Greenville will send right-hander Eammon Portice to the mound as Augusta has yet to name a starter for Tuesday's contest.
After the series in Augusta, the Drive return home to Fluor Field on Wednesday, June 4th for a brief two-game series with the GreenJackets that will have a "School's Out for Summer" theme. Single-game tickets, group outings, and luxury accommodations can be purchased by calling (864) 240-4500 or visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com for more information.
