8th Inning Costs Catfish

Columbus Catfish News Release

Columbus, GA - The Columbus Catfish (20-37) dropped their 11th straight game, this time to Savannah, by a final score of 2-1.

The starting pitching was tremendous in this game, as the teams traded zero's until the bottom of the 6th when Reid Fronk connected on a home run over the right field wall to give the Catfish a 1-0 lead, which looked very safe with Alex Cobb working on a gem.

However, the Catfish got hurt by a bad 8th inning. Cobb allowed a home run to Matt Bouchard that went between the billboard signs in left field tying the game at 1. Greg Veloz then reached on a bunt single and stole second on a bang-bang play. He then moved to 3rd on a wild pitch and scored on Michael Parker's single, giving Savannah all the runs they would need.

The Catfish were led by Greg Sexton, who was 2-4, and Seth Dhaenens, who was 2-3. Alex Cobb took his 3rd loss of the season after throwing a career high 7 and 1/3 innings and allowing 6 hits, 2 earned runs and getting 4 strikeouts.

The Sand Gnats Maikel Cleto picked up his 2nd win after allowing only 6 hits and 1 earned run in 7 innings of work. Cleto had an interesting line, as he did not allow a walk or record a strikeout. Michael Parker went 2-4 with the game-winning run batted in.

The Catfish are the Class A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.
