
Abruzzo, Francisco Pena Named to All-Star Squad

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Catchers Jordan Abruzzo and Francisco Pena have been named to the Southern Division South Atlantic League All-Star team, the South Atlantic League announced today. It is the first All-Star nod for both Pena and Abruzzo. The Sally League All-Star game takes place June 17 in Greensboro, N.C. at NewBridge Bank Park, home of the Greensboro Grasshoppers.
Abruzzo, 23, who was named to the All-Star roster as a designated hitter, has been Savannah's most consistent hitter this season, hitting .316 with 3 home runs and 21 RBI. He has been among the SAL Top-10 in hitting all season long. With runners in scoring position in 2008, Aburzzo has been one of the best, hitting .400 with 16 of his 21 RBI coming in pressure-cooker situations.
Pena, 18, remains one of the youngest players in the Sally League and is in his second stint with the Sand Gnats. The Santo Domingo, D.R. native is hitting .259 with 2 home runs and 21 RBI. He raised his batting average from .200 on April 18 to .297 on May 7. He has only made one error in 38 games this season.
The All-Star game will take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17 with the Northern Division squaring off with the Southern Division. A complete listing of both All-Star squads is attached.
Savannah begins a four-game road trip tonight in Columbus with RHP Maikel Cleto (1-4, 4.04) taking the hill for the Sand Gnats. The Gnats return home on Friday at 7 p.m. to start a seven-game homestand beginning with the Charleston RiverDogs.
