New-Look Titans Lose Another Heartbreaker to SC, 3-1

January 11, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Titans News Release

Trenton, NJ - The Titans, proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, in their first Post-NHL Lockout game, fell to the South Carolina Stingrays, 3-1, Friday night at the Sun National Bank Center. The loss is the Titans third to the Stingrays this season, as they also dropped a pair of heartbreaking contests in South Carolina, a 3-2 overtime defeat December 8th and a 6-5 shootout loss December 9th.

The teams skated a scoreless first period that saw the home team take a slight edge in shots, 9-7, to the dressing room. The Stingrays (17-18-1-3, 38 pts) scored the lone goal in the second, when Matt Beca took a puck out of a scrum in his own end and broke the other way, skating in alone on Niko Hovinen (4-6-1-2, 17 saves) and beating the Trenton netminder with a wrist shot to give the Stingrays the 1-0 lead with 5:45 remaining in the period.

After more scoreless play to open the third, captain Andy Bombach finally pulled the Titans (14-16-3-2, 33 pts) even with just under 10 minutes remaining, intercepting a pass in the slot and burying a shot past Ryan Zapolski (13-6, 19 saves) for an unassisted power play goal. The tally gives Bombach a team-high 16 goals on the season, including seven power play markers.

Former Titan Ryan Hayes played the role of spoiler in his first game back in Trenton, beating Hovinen at the 16:30 mark for the game-winner, giving the Stingrays a 2-1 lead.

The Stingrays were the able to kill off a late Titans power play to preserve the lead, and overall limited the Titans to one man-advantage goal on six opportunities. The Titans were short-handed just twice in the contest, and the league's fourth best penalty kill was able to shut out South Carolina on both man-up chances. Each club recorded 20 shots on goal in the contest.

South Carolina's Andrew Sackrison added an empty netter as time expired to complete the scoring.

The Titans won't have to wait long for a shot at revenge, as they host the Stingrays again tomorrow night, Saturday January 12th, in the clubs' final meeting of the season. Faceoff at the Sun National Bank Center is set for 7:05 pm. As always, that game can be heard on 107.7 FM The Bronc, or online at 1077thebronc.com with "The Bronc" Daryle Dobos, the Voice of the Titans.

Tickets for all Titans home games can be purchased online at TrentonTitansHockey.com, by calling (609) 341-1100, or by visiting the box office.
